Worshippers and officials arrived in droves at the People’s Salvation Cathedral, known as the National Cathedral, which at its highest point stands more than 125 meters (410 feet) and has an inner capacity for 5,000 worshippers in the deeply Orthodox country. The cathedral’s opulent interior is covered with frescoes and mosaics depicting religious saints and icons.
Proposals for a national cathedral in the country of about 19 million people had been put forward for more than a century, but its fruition was hampered by two world wars and the decades of communist rule, which sought to suppress religion. The Romanian Orthodox Church has called the cathedral “a symbol of national identity.”

Since 1989 only 4 public hospitals were completed.
Also, since 1989, over 7000 new religious buildings were built with public and private funds.
Romania lives in the Middle Ages, when the Church still held power in the state.

I like how people always complain that modern architecture is dull and ugly but when someone actually bothers to build something beautiful for once everyone must immediately jump in to decry it as a waste of taxpayer’s money
Just make up your mind for once.

Why not just make Saint Michael’s Cathedral in Alba Iulia the national church? It’s the oldest in the country and has so many historically important figures buried there.
It’s also in horrible shape and is in need of renovation…

It looks ordinary and they wasted a fuckload of money on it, whereas there is a shortage of schools, hospitals, elder care, etc. Shame on them.

In a country that has suffered with systemic issues and poor infrastructure for decades, this one was kind of like a giant middle finger to pretty much every rational person.
This building is the epitome of vanity, ostentatiousness and, just in the image of the Romanian Orthodox Church, a true monument to hypocrisy.

You all criticize that they are building churches instead of schools and hospitals.
But think about that way: how your government fill the schools and the hospitals with teachers and doctors. You have to find specialists or educate them.
While filling the churches can be done instantly with random uneducated morons.
So it’s a way easier task and you still look good. Because church is good. Right?

Love how Romania Bulgaria and Serbia all are competing to build the biggest orthodox church while all 3 need multiple new hospitals built.
I truly love my country’s regime!
