You’ve mixed up Humphreys and Connolly on the titles of the 2nd and 3rd images

    2. Independent left-wing candidate Catherine Connolly has won the Irish presidency with 63% of the vote, defeating Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys (29%). Connolly led in every constituency except Cavan–Monaghan.

Backed by Ireland’s left-wing parties, Connolly is pro-EU membership but strongly critical of its militarisation, calling for a Europe focused on peace, climate, and social justice. She is a strong advocate for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and social welfare, and supports a referendum on Irish reunification within 7 years.

    3. Just to clarify for the commenters who seem to be a bit confused — the President of Ireland is the head of state, not the head of government. It’s an important role diplomatically but she does not set policy or change the position of Ireland’s centrist pro EU government in any way. Only 1% of Irish people consider political affiliation of a candidate to be influential in their presidential vote according to the Irish Times poll last week.

Irish people broadly speaking are strongly pro-Ukraine, but also attached to our military neutrality as an unaligned state. We aren’t joining NATO any time soon but we are also in line with ramping up support for continent wide coordination on Ukraine and intelligence more generally.

Catherine Connolly was elected largely because she has a strong voice and people want a President who scrutinises government choices, just as her predecessor has done.

    4. FYI the president of Ireland is largely a symbolic role. Ireland itself is a parliamentary system with a prime minister (ik  they use the Irish word, but I don’t know how to spell it)

She’s against European “militarisation” and calls herself a pacifist, lmao probably the most privileged shit anyone can say.. like the vast majority of people arent pacifist by default but often dont have the ability to choose.

I wish militaries weren’t necessary but the EU needs strong militaries both to dissuade Russia and to be on more even footing with the USA to guide global diplomacy.

Ireland once again elect an idealist hypocrite sheltered moron to represent them accurately.

    8. Backing the Hamas narrative and now backing the Putin narrative. People are finally starting to see Ireland as the terrorist-supporting enemy of the west that they’ve always been.
