The world has seen this from the US before throughout history – find an excuse that they can sell to the American people while the real goal is regime change. Iraq, Haiti, Afhganistan, Somalia, etc. The US is not always successful, the American people don’t always buy the reasoning, and you often have to factor in political considerations as a President can often want a distraction or a „rally the flag“ military engagement.
So here we are again, and now with a regime that not only hasn’t learned a single lesson from history, there is a flat-out glee in killing people. We’re likely to see more of this, especially in Central and South America. And ultimately I think this is about Trump wanting an ally in Venezuela so people stop trying to come to the US. You can be a dictator and still gain Trump’s approval. So all the talk about drugs, there is but one target – Maduro.

Two basic things to note. The closest points between Venezuela and the US is 1400 miles. Drug traffickers aren’t trying to close that distance in small, 6-man, fishing boats. Meanwhile, that is a distance that can easily be traversed by land-based aircraft in the US. In other words, no need to position an aircraft carrier in those waters.
The pretexts that trump and Hegseth are disseminating in mass media are blatant lies.

Venezuela has approximately 20% of the world’s oil reserves. The USA has about 3%.

Rubio has been working Trump on this for awhile. He has been trying to get Trump to act on Venezuela to oust the regime. Trump wasn’t interested.
Rubio saw how bad Trump wanted to attack Mexico to go after the drug cartels he spun the narrative to convince him to go after Venezuela due to drugs.
Rubio is a weak man. If the public and media were to put pressure on him he would crack and weaken him with the president.
