Historisch niedrige Wahlbeteiligung bei Präsidentschaftswahl wahrscheinlich, da viele Wahllokale unter 40 % liegen

Remember that 2018, down 12%p on 2011, was already a record low because it was a forgone conclusion that MDH would win.
I personally can’t wait for the spoiled vote and Jim Gavin numbers.
After this election I think there wouldn’t a leader of a major party not in the hot seat as members ask question „What happened“
What did they expect and I mean all political parties, they have made their bed let them lie in it. The by-election will be fun.
I voted at about 7pm and the people at my table in the polling station estimated turn out at their table to be 45%. They did say it was the table with the highest turn out at the centre so the others would be lower.
What did they expect, the two candidates had the charisma of a Turnip .
We’ll know the result by lunchtime
Honestly who to blame? Folks looked at the candidates and nope’d. I know I did. The socialist vs the FG fossil that assisted for the housing crisis and running down the country for the last 15 years. No thank you.
Surprisingly enough when given a choice between syphilis and gonorrhea many people will just opt out altogether.
No shit, all candidates are below just acceptable at best
Go figure it was the choice between a useful idiot and a idiot
Not surprising.
Both candidates were terrible and neither was evil enough to motivate me to vote to keep out the other.
It’s a shame that out of all the politicians in Ireland, the parties thought what we deserved were a nepotist crank, a Fine Gael hack and a scumbag landlord.
Truly the people’s president whoever wins
Connolly likely wins with more than 80% of the registered electorate not voting for her. First time she stands up to the government and there is a constitutional crisis will be interesting.
Gavan Reilly has already called it for Connoly.
No surprise really.
In some Dublinc central boxes, spoiled votes beathing Humphreys.
Maybe we did under estimate this spoil the vote shite.
There is nothing more repugnant and devoid of purpose than an Irish politician.
I think the problem is we actually want to like the person representing us a nation to the rest of the world.
Spoiled votes for the win and they will blame social media or hashtag.
Reading through the comments criticising the candidates on this thread. I do wonder who people wanted in the election? Like, who the fuck do you want to run? Steen, Geldoff, MLM?
A rotten nonimation process resulting in an absolute non-choice of preselected candidates. Who is surprised?
Don’t worry though. The same people who didn’t get off their lazy hole to vote will be the very same ones complaining once the winner is announced that they would have preferred the „other one“.
Well maybe do Saturday voting then.
Well, the election that actually would have made any difference was the last last general election, which changed nothing.
What a massive waste of money, time and effort
I’m not Irish and I can’t vote, living here for more than a decade and it boils my blood I cannot vote
Why y’all not voting?
Seems interesting that the Irish Times specifically is trying to frame this in the worst way possible, after doing their absolute best to smear CC during the campaign.
Turnouts are pointless. I’ve two votes but only voted once therefore I’m a 50% turnout.
I didn’t vote myself, didn’t end up getting back to my constituency until 8pm or so (after university) and couldn’t be bothered. I do prefer Connolly and think she’ll make a better president than Heather, but I didn’t feel it worthwhile to vote against Heather (I’m not very fond of Connolly’s foreign policy views).
If Steen and/or McGregor were on the ballot, I would be more likely to vote against them.
No surprise really, was a terrible choice for president this time around
There was a very low turnout. But it was still marginally more than voted in 2018.
Seeing this right after the journal headline „[Connolly pledges to ’shape a new republic‘ as she’s elected president with largest vote ever](https://www.thejournal.ie/catherine-connolly-wins-6856164-Oct2025/)“ shows how easily the narrative can be hijacked.
