I think the use of „coke“ to mean a generic soft drink is massively overstated, and likely encouraged by the Coca Cola corporation.
I’ve lived in the Southeast, and I’ve never once asked for a „coke“ and had to do any kind of follow up to clarify what kind of soda I was asking for.

More than once back in my fast food days Is have people show up in the drive thru and say something like „I want two Cokes, a Dr Pepper, and Sprite“ and then act like I did something wrong when I’d made four drinks for them.
