    1. Or we could not use it for pointless bullshit, so that the cost of energy goes down.

      >“Let’s say it’s a peak period when everybody’s got their air conditioning on, and I walk in my house and I plug in my car and I have it set up such that my car doesn’t start charging right away because it’s peak period time,” Abramson said.

My electric car charger already does this, and uses a miniscule fraction of the resources that an AI powered solution would use.

LLM AI is a solution deseperately searching for a problem.

I thought this article was interesting because I’m genuinely curious about scalar advantages of AI compared to energy usage. It seems unthinkable how much water is wasted on generating, for example, a simple image edit.

      lol wut?

People have been doing this for years. Many charging setups have timers on them

    5. There is already an energy problem.

So far, AI has not (at least none in the article) actually come up with any solutions to any energy problem. It has not showed us ways to unlock any resources to solve the energy problem. Every thing in this article starts with a *“ai could…“*. Which is fine, it is an interesting article with neat ideas.

But, back to the first point, there is an energy problem.

And the one thing we know…for sure, no *could be* or *may possibly be*…the one thing we know for sure is that making more AI will absolutely add to the energy problem exponentially.

I suppose the thing is, there is really no „we“ here. They are doing the AI thing on a grand scale and they are going to make the energy problem exponentially worse no matter whatever the whoever the we is says. So, hey, cool cool, maybe AI will help solve the problem it is absolutely going to exacerbate. Great.

      Although, maybe it won’t.
