Was the 2018 election embarrassing for sf?
What’s going to be embarrassing is that this will be forgotten by the next election because the presidential election is a non-entity in the grand scheme of things to government parties
The spoiled votes making up 20% of votes in some areas, which is absolutely crazy
A lot of people liked Connolly. Despite the narrative that they were both useless etc etc
Connolly was always going to win by a landslide in Donegal, FG are dead up here, they have no TDs and only 3 of 37 councillors.
Unsurprising. People don’t vote FFG in Donegal
It’s somewhat disappointing seeing all the posts about spoiled votes (mainly ones actually mentioning Steen and Trump).
I honestly thought we were a smarter country. I used to genuinely think globally, we were a significantly more intelligent country, but jesus, it seems there’s a culture of total morons forming.
For someone to wake up, take their polling card up and decide to not only spoil your vote, but doing it by wishing Donald fucking Trump would come save us? Mental. People like that seriously need to get their head checked. They seem to live their lives based on buzzwords and brainrot found on Facebook.
What do these numbers mean?
Great to see FG taking a hammering but you just know all will be forgotten at the next General Election.
Will we see the left now more willing to present a united front and alternative option especially in the next election. Only time will tell and it may not influence voting either way.
There has been a significant and clearly funded campaign of misinformation in this election that has led to spoiled votes. That’s not good and it’s a moving trend of third party actors seeking to undermine European democracies in every way.
But unfortunately so many people won’t recognise this now. And others simply can’t or refuse to see why certain countries want to manipulate even Ireland.
This isn’t good.

People talking about the spoiled ballots, but it is a landslide for Connolly let’s be honest.
Great to see people using their democratic right to spoil to show disapproval of the government as opposed to staying at home and not voting.
When the guy who pulled out gets more than half the votes you got, and the amount of spoiled votes is more than double yours, you know you’re absolutely the worst person running.
Good, they deserve plenty of embarrassment. Yes un many ways this country is doing well, but given the prosperity we’ve had for so long, it’s being utterly fucking wasted in terms of positively impacting the maximum number of people. So many people are now worse off than 5-10 years ago, so many have had their potential curtailed by the lack of ability to get out and have a normal life with a home and a family. The social contract has been well and truly broken thanks to government policy. And they’ve got away with it virtually scot free up til now. Their reckoning is long overdue.
It’s Donegal.
Well how they thought a woman with strong ties to the orange order would ever be fit to represent the country is beyond me. Nothing about being a Protestant.
FG/FF are going to make this all about the spoiled votes to avoid talking about a left wing candidate winning in a landslide. So too will the usual right wing suspects. Connolly winning it in a canter but as usual people only want to talk about the rabble rousers who don’t even know what they’re angry about anymore.
Mairead McGuinness or even Sean Kelly would have undoubtedly done far better, individual politicians tend to be more popular than their Parties or attract votes across party lines, e.g. Michael D attracted a lot votes from people who would never vote Labour. This election you had to choose between 2 sh!t sandwiches, but one came with option to punish the government. SF didn’t field anyone because they know they are just as unpopular as the Government
As someone who disliked the majority of independent candidates who contested, this is evidence that the government’s attempt to dictate the presidency has backfired.
Míchael picked a candidate out of the air to keep Bertie and Kelly out of the conversation before the next GE.
FG picked and then whipped their councillors, shortly followed by FF! Completely not in keeping with how the nomination process is meant to work, and as such the candidate pool has never been this narrow historically. Protest vote is actually fair given how badly FFG undermined the electoral process.
There’s a timeline where I got to watch Bertie Ahern and Connor McGregor debate and I’ll never forgive FFG for robbing us of it.
It is embarrassing for FF and FG but the number of spoiled means that are a group of people who do not feel represented by the all the established parties including SF. If you include the low turn out a LOT of people don’t really care about the role of president.
This leaves the path open for another party to come in, this is how the tea party/MAGA movement got started in US. This is a problem for everyone. This is people sending a message to all parties. Just hope they are not so concerned about their own infighting inside the party or fighting existing parties to see it.
FF messed up their candidate selection profoundly and FG’s main candidate (who had been clearing the decks for a long time for a run) dropped early on. However both the two main parties thought they are had a lock on the presidential contest and didn’t take it seriously.
With that said it is president, 2 terms of Michael D Higgins hasn’t brought ‘left wing’ parties like SF into power either.
Anecdotal as the Presidential is, as someone that recently enough left Ireland due to the living conditions there, I’m not surprised and somewhat gratified to see people basically vote for „anything but the current parties“.
I know there are concerns about the violent far-right movement and the „spoil the vote“ thing, but truly, this movement would be far less prevalent if FF/FG hadn’t let conditions get so bad through corruption, inaction and „ah, sure it’ll be grand“ attitude. At the very least I hope both parties get a kick next election, but there is seldom such follow-through.
