Can you imagine how drones would have changed this?
Edit: and by drone, I mean small, unit deployed, fpv or surveillance drones.
Having real time infrared overhead views would be a game changer. You’d be able to pinpoint where hostile fire is coming from.
Goal of getting „these people to stand up to the Taliban“ never would have worked. „These people“ were the Taliban! American strategy to have Afghans rat out Taliban also was a failure. Tribes just ratted out their traditional tribal enemy, not the Taliban. Hell, they all were Taliban united by hatred of infidels. Take away the infidels and they go back fighting each other like they have been for thousands of years.
