It is the latest indication that Trump’s previously seemingly good relationship with Putin has soured.
Trump has flip-flopped between praise and criticism for the Russian leader, and while Putin has avoided direct personal criticism of the US President, his officials have issued sharp rebukes.
# We are ‘stablemates’
Trump claimed during a presidential primary debate in October 2015 that the pair got to know one another on an episode of the US news show *60 Minutes* and were “stablemates”.
# ‘A very outstanding person’
In December 2015, as Trump was on his first election campaign, Putin described him as the “absolute leader in the presidential race” and a “very outstanding person, talented, without any doubt”.
# A ‘courageous man’
In November 2024, Putin congratulated Trump on his US election victory, calling him a “courageous man”.
Speaking at an event in the Russian city of Sochi, Putin said that Trump’s claim that he can help end the war in Ukraine “deserves attention at least”.
# Working together to bring peace to Ukraine
After a telephone call between the two leaders in February, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he and Putin had agreed to begin negotiations immediately to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine and to visit each other’s countries.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: “We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations.”

And in a few weeks he’ll flip again and we’ll see Trump and Putin walking hand in hand on the red carpet in one of the Gulf states or something like that.
This whole theater is getting quite tiresome.

Trump should surrender to Russia and China now to avoid losing WW3. The U.S. is already almost too weak to protect itself and anyone. The U.S. is becoming a reckless killing machine. The U.S. has a ratio federal debt to GDP of almost 130%. It’s broke and broken. „Communist“ China is buying out the U.S., with its exports.
