What’s with socialists being so politicaly aligned with Russia all the time?

      >DUBLIN — She’s slammed NATO, voted against EU treaties, been accused of offering propaganda boosts for dictators from Russia to Syria — and now she’s on track to become Ireland’s next president.

    3. It’s ironic to be proudly “neutral” and anti-NATO when everyone knows that if Ireland were ever attacked, half of Europe (and the UK/US) would rush to defend it. Neutrality is easy when your security is guaranteed by geography and other people’s armies. Ukraine doesn’t have that luxury — which is why pacifism sounds noble in Dublin and suicidal in Kyiv.

    4. > **But Connolly has gone farther, defending Hamas’ right to play a future role in any Palestinian state.** That drew rebukes from Prime Minister Micheál Martin, the leader of Fianna Fáil, and Foreign Minister Simon Harris, leader of Fine Gael, the other party in Ireland’s center-right government.

      > **It’s her NATO-critical stance on Ukraine**, and opposition to wider European security moves, that could soon be generating the most awkward headlines for an Irish government caught between the state’s official neutrality and its support for EU efforts to bolster Ukraine.

      > Connolly faced questioning from supporters at one campaign event in a Dublin pub after she compared Germany’s current plans to boost defense spending with Nazi militarization in the 1930s. But she’s stood firm in her opposition to the EU’s ReArm Europe plans to boost defense spending by €800 billion.

Wow, what a prick. Can’t Ireland vote in a socialist who *doesn’t* simp for dictators and terrorists?

      Irish person here.

Nobody cares about this presidential race. There is only 2 candidates and they are both terrible. It will be without question the lowest voter turnout ever.

Also it doesn’t matter if she is a devil worshipper. The position of President in Ireland means very little. No power or sway whatsoever.

We had a great run with Michael D Higgins.

    6. Why would Irish people be against EU. They are making a lot of money fron taxes that should be paid in other EU countries.

In case it needs to be said, the president is a purely ceremonial role in Ireland. She can think what she wants on all these topics but its the government that has all the power

When is the west going to ban social media. It’s the same story in every country, Russia is getting their people in power to destroy our civilisation. It’s laughable how stupid these governments are

Gross. Another tankie! Ppl think they are idealists, but in fact they are stupid fanatics talking same shit like its 1960s.

    10. Claim neutrality but be entirely dependent on US multinationals, EU grants and the UK (NATO) air force to patrol your airspace.

That is a perfect example of being stunningly full of shit.

There ain’t such a thing as a „neutral“ country on this planet. There’s only countries that are far away from enemy borders and hypocrites.

Ultimately, the Republic of Ireland is a small player and a bit of a tax fiddlers dream for US conglomerates, hence the high GDP, whist having a low level of actual industry. They can be as pacifist as they like, because no-one is going to attack them!

She’s a „modern socialist“ with a baseline Palestinian obsession, and the capacity to be forgotten by history. Perfect for the Republic, methinks.

    12. What a time to be a critic of NATO, about the only thing that is keeping Putin focused on only trying (and failing) to take Ukraine instead of conflict leaking out elsewhere too.

Our current president recently falsely accused Israel of trying to invade Egypt and nearly caused a major international incident. Yet everyone loves him.

To be clear those who are passing by:

The Irish presidency is a symbolic role. It has no power whatsoever, and the most she will do is visit other nations for a chat, and occasionally make a speech.

She is not pro Russia, she has never been pro Russia. She is not pro Assad, she has never been pro Assad.

I could go on, but those are the only two points that truly matter. Her being pro Russia is just campaign smear tactics, and anything you hear about her in relation to nato is meaningless given she has no power in military policy.

Of our 3 candidates (2 now), she is best suited for the symbolic role, and that’s all there really is to it.

    15. Really? No need for the British to send their navy again when Russia has ships in their waters, then. An island nation without a fucking navy.
