Obviously Ford is pretty untouchable so none of this really matters but I can’t believe they didn’t just throw out that goal when they ditched developing the green belt. “We heard you loud and clear but that was a pretty big piece of the plan so yeah let’s get that news cycle churning and forget about it, folks”
We need some Federal courage to demand a broader consideration for what constitutes a home, and how cities are designed. Even Poilievre was proposing rewarding high density builds around transit. It’s not a bad idea! But we can do more.
Federal-approved plans for condominium projects; townhouses and apartments of *reasonably adequate size for a small family*. Go full stick and carrot: throw funding at municipalities that reduce dependency on automobiles and increase population density, and *harshly* deny funding wherever that doesn’t occur.
Oh, your area doesn’t believe in density and wants to keep its small town appeal? Fine, no federal dollars for any resident living in that area. No federal grants, no federal loans, and provide only sufficient funding to maintain federal infrastructure.
Oh, your area is all-in? Great, the Federal Government is here for you. Stacks of cash to break ground on transit projects, to build parks, civic facilities and housing. Finance construction projects with prime-rate loans. Do *everything it takes* to make that area build fast.
Wait what?! But the numbers that’s seemed impossible at the time were so solid according to the people who wanted to be seen announcing a fix to the problem they don’t want to fix. Weird. Next you will tell me all that training money didn’t train people.
1.5 million tents will be popping up then.
Cause whether they build homes or not there will be people who need them and if there’s nothing – we see what happens.
This is why we must never congratulate the government- any government- for setting lofty goals. Goals are not policy. Yet they make the grand announcements and expect us to praise them for it.
And exploring alternate ways to fuck renters out of their rights so landlords can profit further at the same time.

I will never forget Doug Ford lying about what a fourplex was in order to preventing zoning/density reform. Which is one of the biggest tools to help on the affordability and accessibility side of things in regards to the housing crisis that is ripping not just Ontario but this nation apart.
He tried creating a fear campaign around fourplexes. Fourplexes….
