Pensions beat wages when inflation was higher.

Pensions beat inflation when wages in higher.

Pensioners racked up record government debt with low taxes pre 2020s, making themselves the wealthiest generation ever.

      Still it is not enough.

    2. This is not sustainable.

Working people are being crushed to pay for pensioners.

It’s time to scrap the triple lock.

I work for a certain bank that rhymes with Gloyds Lanking Broup. Our pay review for 2026/27 is paltry (below inflation), across all bands (pleb bands, I’m sure Exec bonuses will be ridiculous again), so this is a real kick in the teeth.

I have a theory that the BoE will be advising big employers to limit payrises for next year to try and get on top of inflation, which is great, apart from seeing that the pensioners are getting payrises bigger than the working population. Many of them still more than capable of working too.

A policy where pensions are guaranteed to be an ever increasing percent of GDP is insane. This needs to be scrapped.

    5. Why does the entire political class of this country do nothing but twerk for pensioners

We are teetering on the brink of the state pension exceeding the income tax threshold, which will be very interesting when it inevitably happens

Pensioners will then turn around and say that immigrants and the poor are why the country is going bankrupt

People have been screaming for months that pensions should be linked to wage growth. Now that’s the case, they’re still unhappy.

Sounds good to me. Where do I get one of these “pensioner” jobs, is there a course I can go on?

What do you mean they’re only open to old people, that’s outrageous age discrimination.

Fun fact: The triple lock is going to be nothing compared to the state intervention needed to prop up ex-private sector workers when they come to retire to maintain any kind of standard of living.

Boomers had gold plated pensions across the board, private sector people working today …do not. Stagnant salaries and 3%-5% employer contributions (even if topped up to 8% by salary sacrifice) is simply not enough and is a huge timebomb for the UK economy and future budgets.

Too difficult a problem of course, so instead of doing something about it, our governments just ignore it and kick the can down the road.

Pension rises by inflation, benefits rise by inflation, most bills rise by inflation (or more) annually. Wages don’t. How are people supposed to afford everything?

    13. As a working taxpayer, I find our nations Welfare bill is absolutely demoralising. It’s really starting to make me feel bitter about pensioners, angry about illegal migration, and enraged about the number of PIP claimants.

I’m a normal, hardworking person, I don’t hold radical views – left or right – yet I am being pitted against other sectors of the population. I can feel myself becoming a more hateful person because of it.
