European nations buying F-35s believe that the USA will be back to sanity soon? Or are they confident that they will reverse-engineer stuff if the shit hits the fan?

    2. 6th Gen birds can’t come any faster. For now the f35s the best the west has to offer.

    3. „Well you know, the Germans they like our planes better because they are the best… So if Germany does not behave, we can switch them off, like that, as a King, I have that power.“

PS: to the weak pippis downvoting this.

      A) they have the capacity to do it: [https://www.yahoo.com/news/f-35-kill-switch-could-170426053.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAALZHBb5Y_DZ7k0LkxpS_MQ8HnVmKprYDoBdIl3KMntpJ0BtsYiiJWIuMYT5g4GSKRpcQ4EAQx86POfxR_TzcC-KfPjylmsGN8XJCANdWjMFOwAcapbGsu6e9AqgBF0ptI7h2lDdjK1kP4lHowe6enwEIKYFOkVzy4Y11pMpt4LF_](https://www.yahoo.com/news/f-35-kill-switch-could-170426053.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAALZHBb5Y_DZ7k0LkxpS_MQ8HnVmKprYDoBdIl3KMntpJ0BtsYiiJWIuMYT5g4GSKRpcQ4EAQx86POfxR_TzcC-KfPjylmsGN8XJCANdWjMFOwAcapbGsu6e9AqgBF0ptI7h2lDdjK1kP4lHowe6enwEIKYFOkVzy4Y11pMpt4LF_)

      B) this is something that someone from his administration already did with other technologies: [https://www.reuters.com/investigations/musk-ordered-shutdown-starlink-satellite-service-ukraine-retook-territory-russia-2025-07-25/](https://www.reuters.com/investigations/musk-ordered-shutdown-starlink-satellite-service-ukraine-retook-territory-russia-2025-07-25/)

      Stop being delusional.

I know they are buying more Eurofighters as well, but I do wonder – Do we really need more F35’s? The only opponent we might actually use these jets on is Russia. Do they have something that more Eurofighter Tranche 5 can’t handle?

    5. Stabile_Feldmaus on

Terrible. We cannot increase our military reliance on the US. Just because the F-35 is the best plane it doesn’t mean that we need it. Russia doesn’t even effectively have 5th gen fighter jets and this whole theory of nth gen jets and the strategy to deploy them has all been written by and centered around the American military industrial complex anyway. It’s not an absolute truth. If aircraft becomes more vulnerable due to better and cheaper missile technology, the solution is not to buy an advanced and expensive aircraft that is supposed to evade those missiles. The solution is to buy many cheap and dispensible aircraft and equip them with remote control.
The only reason why we might have to buy F-35 is for the US nukes but for that we don’t need them in large quantities.

    6. It’s also made in Europe, and is genuinely the best stealth plane you can buy.

I get the anti USA thing, but Europe needs an option for this.

A few months ago a defense ministry spokesperson said the claims of an additional 15 F35s to be purchaseed were false, let’s see who’s actyally telling the truth.

    8. If you order as many, it means it’s not just for nuclear deterrence.

If you’re engaged in a joint program for a plane with Germany (or considering letting them join in) this rises questions.

Lovely, can’t wait to have more expensive Kit standing on german airfields. Which will turn into the World’s most expensive pile of scrap metal, if parts/software stop. The whole point of re-vitalising national Arms production was lessening of US reliance.

BERLIN, Oct 20 (Reuters) – German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius intends to order an additional 15 F-35 fighter jets from U.S. manufacturer Lockheed Martin [(LMT.N), opens new tab](https://www.reuters.com/markets/companies/LMT.N), a parliamentary source told Reuters on Monday, confirming a report by Spiegel magazine.

Planners expect the aircraft to cost about 2.5 billion euros ($2.9 billion), according to confidential documents prepared for parliament’s budget committee, the source said.

Another source familiar with the matter confirmed the discussions to buy additional aircraft, without citing a number. The defence ministry in Berlin declined to comment.

Germany has already ordered 35 of the U.S.-made jets to replace its fleet of 85 ageing Tornado fighter jets, which are set to be decommissioned.

The F-35 aircraft will succeed the Tornado jets in their role of carrying U.S. nuclear bombs stored in Germany in the event of a conflict.

In July, Berlin denied plans to acquire an additional 15 F-35 fighter jets, but a significantly expanded [defence budget](https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/german-budget-committee-approves-investment-heavy-2025-budget-2025-09-04/) has since created more scope for weapons purchases.

At the time, a [military source](https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/germany-plans-buy-additional-15-f-35-fighter-jets-politico-reports-2025-07-11/) told Reuters that the idea of acquiring 15 more F-35 jets had been part of earlier discussions.

Any decision to purchase more F-35 aircraft could cause new tensions between [Germany](https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/berlin-weighs-developing-fighter-jet-without-dassault-says-source-2025-09-26/) and France, which have been at odds over their struggling fighter jet project [FCAS](https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/french-chaos-delays-meeting-future-european-fighter-jet-2025-10-09/), or SCAF in French.

    11. I find it curious that you need a 5th generation jet to drop a gravity bomb designed half century prior.

It’s like needing a thermal scope in your slingshot!

    12. I’m Portuguese and I say good call. With so many countries like mine dismissing the F-35 projects they will be cheaper and East Europe needs them more now. And for Germany is only one of the options they have, dicktator Trump can’t do much, grounding F35s when the county has another models to use would stop all F35 projects all over the world… I don’t put it pass the yellow Smurf tough.

    13. 15 extra wil give the Wing (TaktLwG 33) at Buchel some reserve and a fixed number for the training and conversion unit at Ebbing ANGB.

Articals like these keep forgetting the F-35 has lots of European (and UK) made components.

    15. Prestigious_Egg9554 on

The EU had 4 years to hit the mobilization button and start producing and ordering equipment for the ZSU. Instead, it let the Ukrainian army to atrophy to an abysmal state. It’s answer to the worsening situation in the east instead is to throw mad cash into the American MIC, whose president, might I remind you, is a Russian lapdog and whose administration considers the EU an enemy.

What are the F-35s going to be used for exactly? Countries categorically refuse to confront the Russians and even shooting down drones which violate borders is considered too scary.

With the money wasted on that, you could have build and delivered enough equipment to kill 10s of thousands of Russians and protected that many Ukrainians, whether we talking about drones, IFVs/APCs, artillery and SPGs, or 4th gen Jets and rockets.

    16. That’s the consequence of NOT having your own advanced aviation research and industry, also the consequence of relying on other countries TOO MUCH on defense sectors.

Be independent, or be a sucker.
