This article is working overtime trying to make a political movie sound not that political. Yes, the movie pokes fun at republicans and liberals alike, but the cause the revolutionaries are fighting for is inherently leftist: free borders, free bodies, freedom of choice, and community forward. I don’t even think the movie tries to paint this in a hopeful light either, an argument could be made that no one really “wins” besides maybe the Christmas Adventurers?

Counterpoint: Yes, it is.

I think it’s obvious that the movies does not portray the domestic terrorist group french 75 as good. For example in the bank, when she shoots the guard.

I was worried the article was going to take the approach of „the revolutionaries in this movie are flawed, therefore the point of the movie is that revolutionaries are bad actually.“ That’s the shallow reading of the film I feel like I’ve seen a lot of lately, and was relieved that the article didn’t try it.
The film’s leftist politics are stronger because it doesn’t try to skim around the fact that left-wing revolutionaries are still perfectly capable of fucking up and making bad decisions, as all human beings are. That doesn’t invalidate the ideals they’re fighting for, nor does it somehow justify the authoritarians in charge. PTA trusted his audience to understand that, and thankfully most of them have I think.

Realities truth tends to have a Left wing bias lol so just means the movie is grounded in reality

One of the first possible memes that I came across on message boards back in early 00s was: I Want to Believe.
Somehow I feel it’s relevant here.

Weird, I clicked on the article and it just says “durrrrrrr” over and over again. Must be my glasses.

It doesn’t really matter. While the movie is incredibly made- acted, shot, edited- the story lacks a compelling narrative or characters with enough depth to truly relate to in a meaningful way. It’s got amazing car chase scenes, (loved those hills!) than it is meaningful, metaphorical art.
It’s really such a basic story stretched out to nearly 3 hours. The actors did so well but what exactly is lockjaw’s motivation through any of this. People don’t hold on to things that long. Not on this level. The right wing lunatic cult racists are borderline absurd, even tho I don’t doubt scenarios like this exist. I just don’t see it through the characters in this movie. It’s one big shiny Bond movie without James Bond. Shallow.

Well the movie follows leftist characters, but they’re not always portrayed positively at all

PTA has very libertarian themes in his movies that provide more of an alternative perspective from the traditional left-right spectrum.

I don’t think the point of the movie was political per se, and I certainly wouldn’t call it a political movie as I define the genre.
To me, it’s a movie about family. Politics is the side show.
And Sean penn is stealing Chris cooper roles.

The movie is based on a book from 1990 titled Vineland bottoms Pynchon. Its interesting that the themes of the book feel like themes from today’s political climate.
I think labels like ‚right‘ or ‚left‘ are spcial traps designed to get us fighting. Instead, call.out explicitly what you agree or disagree with..

Of all the articles that didn’t need to be written…. YES this is a leftist movie, NO it does not fucking matter. You’re defending it like it’s a pejorative.

Lol why is this country so allergic to leftism? The Cold War propaganda is insane.

It was a movie about 2 men trying to escape their past.

Only accomplishment of the movie is proving modern audiences have become so accustomed to being told what to think that any movie with any nuance is nothing craved.
Wrong time, costing way too much. Continued P&A by the likes of OP peddling more bs is just going to turn even more potential audiences away.

I’m a staunch left-winger and I walked away quite underwhelmed.
I found *Don’t Look Up* to be a much more enjoyable film and criticism of modern society.
