It’s so cool to see what other countries are doing to create an all-digital ecosystem. Then I look at Canada’s situation and get depressed because we basically look like luddites. We could have what Denmark has.
Instead we take 10+ yrs, burning billions of dollars delivering junk mail, delivering flyers, until we actually modernize our postal service for the very few times we get something important in the mailbox.
The reason why our letter volume is higher is the same reason why it’s unprofitable. They‘re not charging what it actually costs. The only reason we’re still getting bills and other commercial notices by mail is because it’s subsidized to the point of being cheaper than modernizing their systems for electronic delivery. Start charging what it actually costs and the volume will quickly vanish.
Move to letter delivery every three days and pass legislation to ensure mailed bills give people the same amount of time to receive and pay.
Let Canada post install super mailboxes in existing areas IF they want to. All the fuss about old people not being able to access the mail is foolish. If you’re not able to get to something two blocks away you’re probably not living in a detached house at this point.
But I wouldn’t look at a country that’s smaller than Nova Scotia with a fifth of their population living in one city as a guide to our postal future.
(As an aside, it continues to amaze me that Marvin Ryder gets quoted in all these things. The guy wasn’t a young guy when I went to school three decades ago, retire ffs)
There is no reason for daily letter delivery any more. Anything that needs to be handled in a timely manner can be handled electronically.
I’d we’d cut back to once a week we could still accommodate our oldest generation – many who don’t use a computer/smart phone, etc. This would still allow for the mailing of local newspapers in smaller communities, as well.
A county that doesn’t have to match anywhere close to what Canada needs is what’s being used to compare here…we are getting ready for massive austerity and the cbc is normalizing this to the public with these articles
You would think that a country so large with so many remote areas like Canada would have started that transition a long time ago to be more efficient.
Why are we always so reactive to new realities instead of proactively plan for them?
