I bet they were after the special Nintendo 3DS consoles used for the audio guides. They are phased out starting last month and people were legit trying to steal them
/jk but I wish lol

For anyone wondering what was stolen, it’s apparently nine pieces of jewelry from the Napoleon collection, on display in the Galerie d’Apollon.
I haven’t found any sources with information on what has been stolen yet, I’m assuming that it isn’t going to be the Mona Lisa right..?

Fingers crossed it’s the Mona Lisa.
Then I could actually visit the place without being put off by the nine hour long queues just to get in, 99% of which just want to see the Mona Lisa, take a photo on their phone, then leave.
Would also make a bloody good film in years to come.

„After breaking windows, two men entered the building, while a third remained outside. The thieves stole nine pieces from Napoleon and the Empress’s jewelry collection: a necklace, a brooch, a tiara, and more. They were placed in the Napoleon and French Sovereigns display cases.“
>According to preliminary findings, the perpetrators, who were fully hooded, entered the building from the Seine side, where construction work is currently underway. They used a goods lift to gain direct access to their target room in the Apollo Gallery.
>After breaking the windows, two men entered the room while a third remained outside. The thieves stole nine pieces from Napoleon and the Empress’s jewellery collection, including a necklace, brooch and tiara. These items were displayed in the Napoleon and French Sovereigns showcases.
> According to a source inside the Louvre, the famous Regent, the largest diamond in the collection weighing over 140 carats, was not stolen. The damage is yet to be assessed.
How do they sell this stuff? Presumably they steal it on commission?

Burglary surely, robbery is with weapons.

How did this even happen? I thought the security was top notch in landmarks like the Louvre.

Billionaires with secret showrooms will put them on display

Wouldn’t these be easy to track with this day and age? There are so many cameras on roads.

No underground tunnels that took years of construction, no mission impossible artristry going through windows and dodging laser detectors. No, it was Dave and Mike from down the road who smashed the window, grabbed it and ran off. Insane.

If we were in a Dan Brown novel, tomorrow an alleged descendant of Napoleon would proclaim himself the new emperor of France on the basis of an obscure law of the 2nd French Republic and lawyers would prove him right.

To bring come context: there have been a string of theft targetting French museum, due to insufficient security (low funding) and high-value items.
For example, 6M€ (and much more due to the unique, historical nature) worth of items where stolen 1 month ago from the Museum of Natural History in Paris.
