Why is Jimmy Lai supposed to matter to Canada? He doesn’t,  there’s no real connection beyond the headlines.

He wasn’t simply a “pro-democracy activist”, I’m not sure why everyone is under the impression he was.  He quite transparently aligned himself very closely  with U.S. interests. That’s not a moral judgment, just an observation. When you make yourself a political asset for a foreign power, like the US State Department in this case, and are very open about it, the consequences are fairly predictable.
