Not surprising to be honest. Basically for westerners to understand this:
1. Young people are tired of the political infighting (much like the divide in the US).
2. Taiwan has a lot of economic and social issues like aging infrastructure, stagnation of wage, inflation, etc. Young people feel disillusioned and pessimistic about their future.
3. The younger generations grew up with a stronger and more prosperous China. They don’t have the old stigma of China being a poor country.
4. Over the years, many Taiwanese have found economic success in mainland China. Yes, the CCP government is authoritarian, but when you can make so much more money and live a better life in China, people simply don’t care.

It seems our western friends are disappointed because they can’t incite hatred against China in young Taiwanese people anymore. I‘m so sorry lol.

Young people are going to go with whoever offers them better financial prospects. Job market sucks for young people everywhere right now.

Not surprising as Taiwan has stagnated hard economically, their politics is messy, no one really wants to be conscripted. Grass may look greener the other side. But they are probably just looking at tier 1 cities.

It is always about Economics. When economics are bad for young people, they will lose faith in traditional politics and look elsewhere. In United States it is Maga, in Germany it is AFD, and in Taiwan it could be pro-China. In the current democracy system, young people are unrepresented (population growth is negative when excluding immigrants in most OECD countries), and not surprising the policy outcomes are not favorable to the young.

If China sieges the island, they do not have a choice. You see how unresponsive that the US has been towards Ukraine under Trump.

Thats why I always thought people worrying about an invasion of Taiwan are exagerating, the status quo will be eternal, and if is not, then is because the mainland absorbs Taiwan due to convenience of both parties, bit by bit until they are de facto the same country

It’s fairly normal for teenagers (the article specifically talks about under 18) to look at the biggest cities in the region, or at the country where most content / pop-culture in your native language comes from and be like whoa, I wanna go there, I wanna be part of that. At that age, you don’t understand yet what the drawbacks of that place are. These are really non-news.
And no, that’s not a problem for the government, if it’s „just“ the teenagers.

It’s a problem because the DPP entire political playbook is blaming China or deflecting about China whenever domestic issues need to be addressed. In short, they have no real policies other than blaming China.

China is running online psyops and we need to do something about online influencing. Russian psyops practically handed the US to Nazis, and Russia is hardly the most intelligent adversary. China could do what Russia does but 10x better. Guarantee you they target Taiwanese platforms. Governments need to hold these platforms accountable for tracking their users better to identify bots. Reddit, Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram, these are the weapons of the future and the future is now.

It shouldn’t be about anti-China, but anti-authoritarianism.
I mean, look, you can say that I am one of the 13 million survivors of the biggest genocide in the history of China (a genocide of the majority ethnicity, Han, in the form of the one child policy). About 120 million people didn’t survive. Because of that, I (a Chinese Canadian, hence I know exactly what the CBC is) am a big detractor of the regime. I would love nothing more than for the Communists to collapse tomorrow.
Despite this, I don’t hate China, nor do I hate its people. In fact, I see Chinese people as victims of the regime who are completely helpless. They have been scared into submission after 76 years of torture and mass murder. I see an opportunity, however unlikely, when Xi dies. I think there will be a power vacuum, and when that happens, there could be a fight within the highest levels of government, which could destablize the entire regime. I think the Republic of China should use that opportunity to convince the southeastern, liberal places to secede and join them (to liberate these areas from their ruthless dictator, which hopefully results in the reunification of the Republic of China by peaceful means, however long it takes). We were taught in school that people were liberated in 1949, but that wasn’t true. The truth is that China was never liberated, and Taiwan wasn’t liberated until 1987–less than 40 years ago.

Everyone here saying this is bad. I bet if the day comes Taiwan and China come to better terms China will probably build a high speed underwater train to them or something.
I really dont imagine at this point China invading Taiwan when their entire playroom around the world has been to develop other nation’s infrastructure in exchange for resource and better trade routes.
I think the worse China is doing is harassing the Filipino fishing boats? Better shooting them with water cannons than air striking them and saying they were carrying drugs or something stupid like that

And that isn’t an issue, it’s good to have differing opinions. I don’t want anything to do with the Chinese government, not do I ever want to subject myself to their all mighty great firewall, but not being able to criticize your own government in public is something I don’t want to wish on anyone, especially our young ones.

For all the fearmongering I’m sure this is the Chinese strategy. Bide your time until there’s a populist movement that wants to rejoin. Maybe give it a bit of help via WeChat. Then lock it in in perpetuity. Much, much cheaper and cleaner than war.
