BC will die erste neue medizinische Fakultät Westkanadas seit Jahrzehnten eröffnen

Not mentioned in the article is some of the history behind this. [UBC lobbied hard against the creation of any new medical schools in BC](https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2025/10/14/sfus-new-medical-school-no-blanket-solution-healthcare-crisis/). It may have been [announced in 2020](https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/bc-ndp-sfu-surrey-medical-school), but the behind the scene lobbying went back as far as the prior Liberal Government under Gordon Campbell.

While SFU has had some form of medical school for decades, because of the intense political pressure from UBC [they had to duck and weave](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/british-columbians-our-governments/government-finances/public-accounts/2009-10/sup-e/simon-fraser-university-fs-2009-10.pdf) to ensure that their programmes weren’t competing in any way with anything that UBC offers:

>The growth of the Faculty of Health Sciences is one of the University’s key strategic priorities and enrolment within the Faculty has increased five times since Fall 2006. **SFU continues to plan innovative clinical programs in the health sciences and medicine that do not duplicate established programs of existing medical schools**.

I think it has gone woefully under-reported just how significantly we have been harmed by the existing medical schools, like UBC, jealously guarding their programmes from competition.
