Ah yes, carbon capture. The 21st century version of a perpetual motion machine scam. I will repeat the thermodynamic reality; that if you can produce enough energy to capture sufficient amounts of carbon, either at the emissions source, or by atmospheric capture (whether passive or active), then you’ve solve the energy problem and no longer need to use emissions-heavy processes at all.
This feels all very „all carrot, no stick“ and extraordinarily vague. I’m currently very skeptical of Carney when it comes to climate action, and I’m open to being surprised, but I think if we want to do anything on this file, we need to be decisive, and so far this feels like anything but that, just tweaking around the margins to try and wave a shiny tax credit bauble in front of companies hoping that they’ll do the work.
He doesn’t have much choice. The carbon tax was the easiest thing to do but it became politically toxic. If the electorate isn’t willing to pay a real price for the environment there isn’t much any politician can do about it.
