I feel like once you torture someone to death “scammer” isn’t at the top of your CV, it’s “torturer”, right?

I don’t get what their objective even was here? They send a ransom to the family, but then kill him days later without even really giving them a chance to pay up. Were they just looking for an excuse to torture someone to death
