This article brings different academic research about multilateralism an democracy into conversation – most strikingly the research that shows, how international organizations might become drivers of democratic backsliding, after the US’s turn to authoritarianism.
The current UN has gradually become nothing but a tool for authoritarian regimes to seek legitimacy and undermine the founding principles of the UN including personal freedoms, justice and human rights. I fail to see how it can even be saved at this point.
There would be an implicit link. The creation of UN is rooted in wilsonian liberal institutionlism. Along with World Bank, IMF, WTO, EU, NATO and other liberal institutions, it attempts to shift the ground state of world affairs from anarchy towards common value, rules, norms and cooperation, through promotion of capitalism and democracy. The UN itself achieves this by establishing rules and norms for orderly conduct of international relations. Its inception was primarily a US led effort endorsed by victors of WW2, although each have their own reason for their support. We should not confuse its mode of operations ie multilateralism with its source of legitimacy ie power and prestige of the United states or its implicit link to promotion of democracy.
