Not to mention misusing anti-terrorism law against non-political criminal organizations to appease our next door neighbour, and the raft of authoritarian measures in bills C2 and C9.
Between 1982 and 2025, Quebec has used the notwithstanding clause over 15 times to push through legislation.
Between 1982 and 2019, Ontario used it…zero times.
Saskatchewan used it once.
Alberta used it once.
I’m laying out this history, because it’s quite clear that nobody in the federal Liberals gave two shits about the deployment of this clause as long as Quebec, their major seat of power, was the only province regularly using it.
But, when Ontario and Saskatchewan under conservative Premiers used it once or twice over the last couple years, that’s when it suddenly becomes the thing that will tear the country apart. Now we’re all supposed to be terrified by anybody even mentioning it.
Sorry, but this stinks of rank partisanship and I’m not surprised Sean Fraser’s concerned face is all over it.
Nice trying to set the stage to stop the provinces from using the clause. That’s our negotiated constitution… try to rip it up and see where that goes
The LPC needs to stop being hypocrites about this. Quebec used it so many times. I guess western provinces where they have few seats don’t count.
I wonder why the Federal government is choosing this as a hill to die on. The provinces are going to laugh in their faces. No way they will go along with this.
