The descent into fascism is completely unambiguous in the US right now, that’s why there is consensus about what is sometimes a difficult evaluation to make since „Fascism“ is not a well-defined term. But the parallels with Fascist ideology and policies in 1930’s Europe are unmistakable. It’s not the common partisan political rhetoric that is always trotted out during election cycles. Trump is giving historians literally hundreds of years of future research fodder.

    2. *“Opposition media outlets aren’t being shuttered,*“

No, they are being bought outright by billionaires who are aligned with Trump’s ideologies. Look at the recent purchase of CBS by Larry Ellison’s son, David Ellison.

They are reportedly preparing a bid to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN.

Wherr can we find reliable information after all this?

    3. Glass_Memories on

People were sounding the alarm about this back in 2016. A current historian and expert on fascism wrote an article declaring this fascism in 2021. We know. Everyone knows.

Also…this is very much still America. We’ve been at least fash-curious if not fash-adjacent for a looong time. It’s totally on-brand and took a lot longer than most people probably expected, but not at all surprising.

Stop with the „THIS IS NO LONGER AMERICA“

This is what USA always was. Hypocrisy, Corruption, GasLighting and so good at each of them, that even some of its very citizens are shocked and awed by the current events.

Minorities have always known, but the Majority never listened. Other countries have known and are enjoying watching the US repeatedly punch it’s own face.

      >this is no longer America

I would argue that this has always been america, the america that pushes right-wing dictatorships in other parts of the world, the america that illegally occupies countries, the america that sends weapons to genocidal countries such as Israel.
The only difference now, is that that violence and authoritarianism is now directed inwards instead of outwards.

    6. FluffyPantsMcGee on

No longer America? If you were capable of becoming this, then yes this is America. Americans need to face up to it and change.

Enough of the “we’re too good for this” American exceptionalism. Admitting mistakes and fixing them makes you better.

    7. raysofdavies on

Of course it is America, what a pathetic thing to say. The kind of thing that leads you here. He’s the ultimate American.

    8. When I was younger and we’d learn about history, I’d wonder how a country, and its people, could be so stupid as to let people like Hitler and Stalin takeover.

I no longer have those questions, as I have all the answers I could possibly need.

    9. If it was always possible to destroy the foundations of American democracy this easily, then they never had one.

    10. Sensitive-Option-701 on

Keep in minds that Trump thinks antifascism is a terrorist group.

    11. „This is fascism, and millions of us see it“

I don’t think anyone believes Americans aren’t *aware* of what’s happening. People think Americans are aware and avoiding action.

      > this is no longer America

That is some give up shit. We’ve detected cancer early enough to cut it out.

You may have to tell your MAGA family to wake the ef up and stop voting for rhetoric that their ’news‘ station pushes.

Fight for America or allow BRICS to dictate the direction of humanity.

„When fascism comes to America, it will be carrying a cross and wrapped in the flag.“ Upton Sinclair, I think

    14. Serious_Hour9074 on

And millions upon millions of Americans aren’t doing a single thing about it.

    15. rodimusprime119 on

Yep. Civil War is coming. It is not going to be like the last one. This one will be bombing and just straight up violence.

GOP wants to see it happen so they can go harder.
I don’t expect the USA to be a countey in 10 years or more so a shadow of itself as multiple states will leave.

    16. KillerIsJed on

America has always been fascist since it was stolen from natives, now the fascism is just mask off blatant.

    17. Ok-Goat-9981 on

They’ve seized control of the country and, in the process, destroyed everything that made it attractive in the first place.

    18. This is a direct consequence of 77 million Americans going brain dead in November. All the ‚centrists‘ and ‚undecided‘ voters who threw in their lot with the fascists because it’s what facebook comments and tiktok talking heads told them to do. This situation is entirely, 110% on them – all they had to do was make the obvious choice of not electing a criminal who lead a fascist coup against their country.

Had they voted for Kamala Harris, the only candidate capable of running the government, Trump would’ve been in jail by now and the GOP in shambles. Yet here we are.

    19. What is even sadder is that the American people are pretty ok with living under fascism. Majority of Americans are just going about their lives just like they did 12 months ago.

    20. New_Alternative8711 on

Gee who could have guessed from Jan 6th that now we’d be looking at a fascist America? /s

    21. Alternative_Rent9307 on

The silent majority sees all this and is horrified. From lefties appalled at the authoritarianism to righties appalled at the government overreach. The regime is trying to get every shit log passed through before we show them our reaction. Just a few weeks now.

    22. My daughter has a test today at school on checks and balances. She has been learning about the core functions of each branch and how they keep each in check. It’s ironic this is in a „US history“ class. She truly is studying something that no longer exists.

    23. Throwawanon33225 on

      Oh, it’s still America.

      Segregation.

      Japanese internment camps.

      Eugenics.

      Forced sterilization.

The shit we did to the Puerto Ricans.

      The slaughter of native Americans.

The children with black lung and mangled fingers from the mines and factories.

      The Nazis hired for nasa.

      Ronald Reagan.

      Lynchings.

      Slavery.

      Police brutality.

Destabilizing Mexico’s government through instigated rebellions multiple times.

      Destabilizing many more countries.

      Agent Orange.

      Prison labor (also slavery).

      Child marriage.

And probably much more I haven’t mentioned.

    24. static-klingon on

You don’t get it. If you want to make America great again, you have to dismantle and burn all of the things that made America great in the first place. It’s just common sense.

      BREAK THE BRAND

Wear Maga gear and Trump Masks to No Kings protests. It sounds counterintuitive but here’s why.

      1) Acts as a shield against ICE agents. If ICE attacks MAGA branded people at a peaceful protest, it makes the Trump brand look bad in the media.

      2) Hurts Trumps Image to MAGATS: Arrests or attacks of MAGA clothed protesters shows that Trump doesn’t care about the left or right, just himself.

      3) Flips the mirror on Trumps image. Narcissists hate the mirror, would piss Trump off to see his brand he created used in protests against him.

      4) Weakens his base and control over the narrative that there is an enemy of the state besides him in the US. If he issues an order to arrest anyone wearing MAGA clothes at a protest, he is declaring that every American is an enemy of his. Even if he doesn’t issue an order like that, the optics of people wearing his brand being targeted shines a spotlight to his base that no one is safe.

      Break The Brand. No Kings.

Historians will say we did it to ourselves by sitting back and letting it happen without resistance, and they’d be right.

      Overwhelming oppression requires overwhelming resistance.

Everybody is watching, nobody is doing.

I used to wonder why people didn’t leave Germany in the early stages. I know now. It’s a complete luxury to just get up and move. It’s so difficult to move to a different state, let alone another country.

    28. AmbivalentFanatic on

This is no longer America for white people, you mean. It’s been like this for other groups for a very long time already.

    29. hot_tamale_5344 on

This happened because we let the ignorant magat scum decide who runs the country, did we expect them to choose a qualified administration? We should have know they would pick the biggest criminal out there, trash just like them.

    30. I-Already-Told-You on

Dude honestly STFU. IT IS STILL AMERICA IF YOU WANT IT TO BE. Crying on the internet and throwing your hands up in the air COULD ensure it’s not America anymore. Showing up and resisting IRL is how we will stop this dumbshit from taking us down a dark path. Speak. Show up. Don’t passively lay down.

    31. blankdreamer on

It happens so fast. They get emboldened when they aren’t stopped early. Now it feels impossible to stop. Once they get a taste of power they won’t give it up.

    32. EmperorBozopants on

Of all the people we could have submitted to, Trump has to be the dumbest, ugliest, and least interesting.

If the president is a fascist and anyone who is against fascism is a terrorist does that mean that anyone who doesn’t agree with The President of the United States of America is a terrorist?
Does that mean anyone against the president from running for a third term is a terrorist, additionally making anyone running against him also a terrorist.
Because I am starting to get concerned about serious terrorist issue in America.
