As can be seen from the recent deal, the US could do so much more, had it wanted to, to bring the current round of war and maybe even the conflict to an end. All it took to reach a deal was to pressure Qatar and promise Turkey some military hardware it had been seeking and suddenly Hamas is willing to release all the hostages. If the US wants peace in the Middle East it is time to stop entertaining the unrealistic notions of both sides. That is, the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian people is not going to last forever, eventually there will be a Palestinian state and all Israeli governments need to understand and agree to it. The more isolated settlements cannot be allowed to expand. On the other hand, Israel’s security concerns are legitimate and such a Palestinian state cannot be established until we are certain it will keep the peace. The right of return is a non starter and Palestinians are never going to get any land past the 1967 borders, and probably not all of the 1967 borders either.

The US and the Arab world have the power to force both sides into a trajectory that will eventually establish such a solution. But it’s not going to be quick. The recent deal proves that we need to stop beating around the bush and set the basic principles and get commitments from both sides to them even before the full resolution of the conflict
