At this year’s New York Comic Con, DC Comics president and publisher Jim Lee made a striking announcement: that the company will “not support AI-generated storytelling or artwork.” “Not now, not ever, as long as [SVP, general manager] Anne DePies and I are in charge,” he added, as quoted by The Verge.

“People have an instinctive reaction to what feels authentic,” he added. “We recoil from what feels fake. That’s why human creativity matters.”

His comments were reportedly well received and met with “cheering” at the New York Comic Con panel discussion.

I’ve heard a lot of people say ‘never’ before and then a little bit down the line, it’s happening

Jim Lee came to prominence as an artist.  I would be surprised if he had any other opinion on the matter.

    4. Using AI is a part of every worksteam and purposefully ignoring it will put you behind. That being said using specifically generative AI to make videos , scripts, ETC make sense to avoid. Like what sort of writer would turn down a quick “plot hole checker AI” for example

    5. Next on profitable business ventures: DC President fired…*months later due to short attention spans* AI will be used a bit to help really let artists do their best work *months later* yeah…all AI now

    6. Given how popular and imitated his style was and still is, I’m sure a guy like Jim Lee is very aware that he’s exactly the kind of artist an AI generated comic book would try to look like.

    7. Nonsense. The tool chains that artists use will introduce AI – it will be unavoidable as not using „magic brush“.

Unless they’re going back to drawing with ink and paper

First off: Wow, Jim Lee became president of DC, when did that happen? Good for him; great artist.

Second: Good to hear. Frankly, setting all other potential ethical concerns I have about AI, I just don’t see the appeal in consuming any form of art that no human had any input into its creation.

    9. I’m glad when people stand up say things directly instead of wishy-washy bs.

    10. This is why it’s necessary to have artists in leadership roles for these things, they CARE about the craft, the artiststry behind movies, games, comics, not just the profit

I trust Jim Lee to stand by this promise. I do not of course trust whoever Warner brother is replaces him with.

    12. DC board of directors „Don’t worry, if you don’t want to use AI, your replacement will.“

Never is a long time. Also what if an artist wants to use AI that is trained on their own work. Who would have a problem with that?

    14. I appreciate the sentiment, but never is a long time. As much as it sucks, this statement probably won’t prove out to be true over the years.
