U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested to his Finnish counterpart, Alexander Stubb, that Spain should be expelled from NATO due to its limited defense spending. The United States has been very firm in demanding that NATO member countries reach the threshold of 5% of GDP in defense spending, as required by Trump’s own administration.

“I requested that they pay 5%, not 2%, and most people thought it wasn’t going to happen, but it was approved almost unanimously. We had one lagging country: Spain […] They have no excuse for not doing it. But that’s okay. Maybe they should be expelled from NATO, frankly,” Trump said at a press conference alongside Stubb.

The ‘problem’ of Spain’s defense spending
In June, Trump stated that Spain “is a problem when it comes to NATO spending” after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government refused to increase defense investment above 2.1% of GDP. Spain is among the NATO countries that invest the least in defense, at 2%—a target set back in 2014—, a percentage it shares with Belgium, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, and Portugal. Another dozen countries report figures between 2% and 2.1% of their GDP.

Spain remains far from the Alliance’s new objectives, which in June set a defense spending goal of 5% of GDP. In addition, NATO plans to carry out “annual reports” to monitor its members’ new efforts.

A lot of Spaniards feel the same. Spain is a burden on NATO, and NATO is a burden on Spain

    3. But doesn’t the US of A spend nothing on „defense“ now that everything is rebranded under the Department of War?

This unhinged president is a bully to the free world. Look what he’s done to his own country. Bit by bit, he is slowly destroying the American way of life

    5. Trump should be expelled from NATO because he keep threatening to invade and annex NATO members.

    6. indigo-alien on

That is simply not going to happen and Trump has no say in the matter except for the USA to leave NATO.

    7. He says this right as Spain approves Israel arms embargo.
This president has neither a spine nor any knowledge of how to run a country.

Add to that he’s giving in to AIPACs demands too.

Edit: he’s like child throwing a temper tantrum. Cry harder bitch.

    8. Please dont let a major us war breakout with this guy in charge. He doesnt know anything about actually running a company much less a country.

    9. Desperately trying to distract from the problems in his own house, Trump deflects the attention away from America

    10. He just realized in Spain people speak Spanish !

Next thing – ICE is going to come for you too Spain !

    11. Trump should be expelled from the planet for being an ass brained piece of shit.

    12. It’s fun to watch him break up with his existing friends and also break others‘ friends… his goal really is to make everyone enemies with each other so that they all turn to him as their one supreme golden smartest-ever leader

I wish president buffoon, would learn to STFU. His ignorance, stupidity, arrogance and petulance is disgraceful and disgusting.

What if failure to meet the minimum requirement meant a nation couldn’t activate article 5? Maybe some caveats for economic crisis.

    15. Delicious_Door_3421 on

I might hate him but he is right on this one, if Spain doesn’t care about defense then they shouldn’t be in NATO

    16. Cognitive_Offload on

The USA cares not for any other nation. Trump is a Russian operative and our planet is small enough that Spain’s military inadequacy is likely better for the health of humanity and our environment.

    17. i cannot wait to read good news about him on page 1. seriously. jesus christ y’all

    18. This is obviously true, yet people will bitch and moan when Trump is actually trying to strengthen the alliance.

    19. The thing he doesn’t understand is that everyone buying US kit, even if it’s not such a large % of gdp, is a benefit to the US. It lets the US have the most advanced kit and be sure they will sell a lot to recover the R&D costs. If everyone else has to spend so much anyway, we might as well develop our own stuff that isn’t dependent on an irrational actor like donald and boost local economies.

    20. Imagine what we could do with that 5% if we didnt spend it planning to kill each other. Its interesting the country with the biggest millitary industrial complex wants everyone else to spend more.

It’s insane that the US President actively seeks the approval of our enemies (red carpet treatment at Alaska meeting with Putin), and seems to work to alienate and make enemies of our friends.

Hmmm one of the most openly anti-genocide nations and Trump wants them removed from NATO. Interesting.

I mean they don’t really matter either way not that I agree with the orange turd on anything

    24. Ballistic-Bob on

Would this have anything to do with Spain voting on an Israeli arms embargo … of course it couldn’t..

    25. lostsailorlivefree on

Trump later reversed and praised Spain as the “greatest smartest country on earth” after aides told him they vote on the Nobel Peace Prize

    26. Yeah sure you could say that Spain is free riding but… Why did Spain joined Nato in the first place? Why does Spain need Nato?

      [We have this](https://www.cvce.eu/en/recherche/unit-content/-/unit/492a8c2c-2850-4ba8-a327-6533841130ec/d5353ecf-ae14-4ebd-9c9e-3725ff6efd04)

Apparently back in the days Morocco was interested in some Spanish cities and islands in north Africa. And also Spain wanted to be in previous version of the [EU](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accession_Treaty_of_Spain_to_the_European_Economic_Community).

[I’ll also add the graph Spain military spending per year just for reference](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/MS.MIL.XPND.GD.ZS?locations=ES)

So yes Spain needed Nato and did benefit from Nato back in the day. But now, do they still need Nato?

Morocco is way [weaker](https://www.globalfirepower.com/countries-listing.phpDispute) than Spain but there are still dispute going on as of [today](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morocco%E2%80%93Spain_relations) and those 2 cities ([Melilla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melilla) & [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceuta](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceuta) ) would be easy for Morocco to grab.

    27. Have you tried asking them to spend a lil‘ more, Donny?

Remember. You are on the BIG playground now and it is really, really big and important to meet people in the middle on things.

Let’s try this Donny. Go over to Spain and knock on their door. When they answer the door, don’t kick them in the nuts and spit on them. Maybe start with asking them if you guys could do a cool high five.
