Here we go again, suggesting literally any change to our immigration and citizenship policies is totally off limits.
There seems to be a bottomless well of people to hate and punish. I guess the queer community should be (temporarily) relieved the federal Tories don’t want to (currently) cause them injury.

Why can’t conservatives not emulate the republicans? No honestly. Why can’t they just be Canadian instead of Maple MAGA.
This is a good policy. No need to hand out citizenship if you’re not a citizen or PR. If you and your spouse are applying for PR, apply for your kid as well. No need for us to evacuate Canadians of convenience out of Lebanon every now and then.
GOOD. We have had an absolute explosion of temporary slave workers. I don’t agree that 99% of these people should even be allowed here in the first place, so I also don’t want their children becoming citizens.
How does it benefit Canada to have a slave labourer toiling at a fast food chain? And then to have those people have kids that are now Canadian citizens, despite the parents presumably having to leave at some point? How does this serve the national interest?
One more reason to fix our broken immigration system: so we don’t end up with situations like this. We are also about to become like the U.S. where we have huge numbers of illegal immigrants that work under the table, don’t get healthcare, don’t qualify for their kids to get an education etc.
The degree to which the Liberals destroyed our immigrstion system is mind boggling. Truly the single worst handling of any area of public policy by any Canadian government in my lifetime.
If you don’t fix it, people will elect someone that will. Look down south for evidence.
This seems like a dumb idea and I hope the conservatives drop it before it becomes mainstream. The country is facing declining population – fewer Canadians is not the answer.

When the Liberals shift right and take their policies, the Conservatives shift further and further right in their culture war.
Personally I have no issue with this. I met someone who never lived in Canada, but at 24 decided to move here for good. How is this any different than someone born in another country and wants to immigrate here. Just because you are born here when you have no ties here, shouldn’t give you citizenship. There were past cases where people came here just to give birth and get citizenship, that isn’t ok. Personally you should only get citizenship once you have been here for a while. That 3 year over 5 year rule to me is also not enough.
Interesting that the criticisms expressed here make no actual argument against the proposal itself and just repeat the mantra that no change can be made to immigration policy. Not obvious how this scapegoats newcomers at all as it wouldn’t even impact most immigrants who don’t come here under temporary immigration programs. Birthright citizenship as a concept was never intended to short circuit requirements to have properly immigrated to Canada in the first place.
That said, this isn’t a real issue. Unless there are significant numbers of children born to temporary residents during their stay (of which I have seen no evidence), any problem here would be better addressed by immigration enforcement rather than changing citizenship rules.
