    1. It took VISA/Mastercard longer to cut off Russia than it took them to cut off porn games. Huh.

    2. I’m not too clear on the Russian economy and financial institutions there. But do the Russians even use those services? Or do they have their own brand of cards or something

    3. Was thinking aswell; what? they still allow those in russia. Makes me wanna change my payment card…

And they did it for the right reasons! Not because it made the most financial sense for them to do so. Profits be damned!

      lol. not really.

Ukraine needs to bomb the banks datacenters in Russia. Simple yet effective way of disabling the economy.

    6. I have to wonder if this will create an opportunity for a BRICS based payment service to fill the void. Given the players involved, it obviously wont be as easy as using a visa or mastercard, but could still be reasonably convenient for their citizens.

I’m guessing that most Russians probably already use something else so it’s really just a publicity deal and really doesn’t mean much

    8. Are Visa and Mastercard really two distinct companies? They keep doing things at the same time.

BRICS will certainly fill the void with quicker posting and faster transactions.

So much for all the rhetoric involving sidelining them through global financial systems two years ago.

Literally no one read the article. Actual visa and Mastercard haven’t worked for a day since 2022. Inside Russia, they used the physical cards and replaced the backend with their own payment system, so practically they are MIR cards just with the Visa/Mastercard logo on them. They did this so that users don’t have to replace their cards en-masse.

MasterCard suspended all network service in Russia in March 2022, as well as terminating licenses for all Russian customers and blocking their ICAs/BINs/RTNs.

The article seems to state this NSPK system was continuing to process domestic transactions on the plastic cards.

Banks are the ones who issue the cards, not MasterCard itself. They’re just the payment network connecting it all together. It seems Russia just put their own payment network in place and kept using the same PAN. This is why the article states people visiting Russia wouldn’t be able to use their MasterCard, because the actual network and the international card issuers blocked it all.

Now that the security certificates on the chips, etc. are expiring, they can no longer use them without risk of fraud.

    14. Visa and mastercard have not worked for years now, not sure what this is even supposed to mean?

The fact this is somehow news even though they implemented their own internal payment system which they’ve been using for years, they’ve done this when it will have no affect at all lmao

Every able Russian get a CC from former Soviet states thus all is well for online thus it doesnt mean isolation.

    17. The noose tightens.

The reason Russia has been taunting NATO countries for a response is because it’s economy is about to collapse, and it needs to blame that collapse on a military response from the west.
