Apparently what we are going to do is stand by and watch as a large chunk of our canola sector migrates over to Australia so that we might protect an integrated auto sector the senior partner is determined to destroy utterly. In fairness they keep repeating this point fairly directly and we keep not hearing it.
OMG, Lutnick is such an idiot.
As far as I know, Canada has about 10% of the auto industry, and we comprise about 10% of the North American population. So despite having an integrated industry, we produce roughly the number of North American vehicles that we buy.
They actually think that if they kill the Canadian auto industry that Canadians will buy „made in America“ vehicles. No f’ing way! (Our new Subaru was made in Japan)
So, when everything is done, they will have caused all of this bullshit to increase their manufacturing by 10%, but the market will shrink by 10% cancelling the expected increase in manufacturing, and Canadians will be buying Japanese, South Korean, and Chinese autos.
Look, if they’ve decided that they want an American-only auto industry, and aren’t open to being sold on the benefits of the North American arrangement that’s been in place for decades, then I’m really not sure what’s left for us to do here. This is an area where they’re being quite clear about what they want and why they want it. There’s no pretext.
At some point, if it becomes clear that the other side is immovable on a particular issue, you need to decide if you’re open to an agreement that doesn’t deal with that issue (which we clearly should be, in this case).
Then maybe we should stop importing all American made vehicles? Lift the Chinese EV Tariffs and negotiate manufacturing in Canada for non American cars. I’m sure Europe and Asia would love to have greater access to the Canadian Market with less competition.
We made a deal that we would not have home grown auto companies in turn the USA companies would build vehicles in Canada and invest in Canada.
Is this is not the case anymore? If so we should slowly open the door for home grown auto sector. Or other companies who will build factories in Canada.
Currently Canada is the biggest market for US-made autos outside the US. Go ahead Lutnick, and see how many American cars we buy in the coming years.
It’s a little ironic that after making American consumers pay more via tariffs to improve the trade deficit, it is likely to become even greater due to the resulting anti-American sentiment.
Not saying what we should do but we should absolutely leverage the nonsense Chinese 100% tariff into the discussion – unfortunately we decided to open war with both.
