This makes sense if you figure you’re in a new location trying to make friends and fit in. You may be more inclined to go to a party with drinking to feel closer to others
People that switch their environments often have less social support, and often need to cope in some way.
Drinking doesn’t mean there is necessarily a problem.
Being an alcoholic or being depressed is.
Socially anxious people who haven’t changed buildings and decided to stay more in their comfort zone and don’t go out, aren’t to be envied compared to an outgoing building changer having a beer with his pals.
I switched schools after 1 quarter of 9th grade. It did not push me into drinking. That said, I moved 3000 miles away from where I previously lived and felt very alone. I am in introvert and as such was never interested in going to parties. My parents never had alcohol in the house either so no temptation at home. I guess I must be an exception to these findings.
I did that but also it was due to my choice. I didn’t like the program I was in and was willing to completely change my environment to be somewhere I thought I’d like more. In the end I think it was more beneficial for me. But again, I chose that, I visited the school, got to look at my future classrooms, and also came in during a year where everyone in my program was new (program started only during high school years)
To be clear, this study is tracking *building* switches, not just school switches. So the through line here seems to be keeping 13-14 year olds away from 17-18 year olds might delay more risky, adult like behaviors.
