> “The quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally — millions. Not thousands, millions … and most of it is shit,” the Oscar-nominated filmmaker said in conversation with his son Luke Scott, according to Metro.
> “I think a lot of films today are saved and made more expensive by digital effects, because what they haven’t got is a great thing on paper first,” he continued. “Get it on paper!”
> Later on in the discussion, Metro reported that the “Gladiator” and “Alien” director was asked if he has a “comfort film” he likes to revisit. “Well, actually, right now, I’m finding mediocrity — we’re drowning in mediocrity,” Scott replied. “And so what I do — it’s a horrible thing — but I’ve started watching my own movies, and actually they’re pretty good! And also, they don’t age.”

He says his movies don’t age (except Black Hawk Down, which he acknowledges…I think. I hate Black Hawk Down, so I could just be projecting there).
But to combat what he says a bit here, I do think there’s still a lot of good new movies coming out. It was only couple of years ago we had the Barbie / Oppenheimer culture craze (and both movies were really good), and in addition to that we’ve had bangers like “Everything, Everywhere All At Once,” “Nope,” “Sinners,” “Mickey 17,” “Hundreds of Beavers” and countless others. There’s good and bad in every era, and I feel that some older directors might think it’s cool to diss on modern films

Ridley Scott is the reason why Tarantino will only make 10 movies. He’s the best example by far of directors going to shit later in their careers. I hate his recent movies so much it makes me wonder if the talent was not due to the people surrounding him or something.

The man who is making historical films but says he isn’t concerned with historical accuracy. His statement applied to his own recent works is true. Also the man who thinks anything pre-1900 doesn’t have any colors.
There are still a lot of very good films that aren’t released to theaters.

Ridley Scott hasn’t made a good movie since The Martian, and since thats an adaption he only gets half credit.

In all eras most movies have been bad like any medium of art, but there are also quite a few good ones that come out. Acting like there aren’t enough quality movies to watch is just being obtuse.

Bullshit. There are so many good movies out there—you’re just lazy AF if you think it’s all remakes and sequels. And this coming from a rich fuck who has all the time in the world, yet for the last decade has been making- two shitty movies and one good one- on repeat. Gladiator 2? Yeah, that perfectly sums up everything wrong with unwanted sequels. Hilarious

He’s probably right, but that is Hollywood’s own self-inflicted issue. They keep recycling the same tropes/franchises/IPs with little to no regard for welcoming in new filmmakers and stories. Sure you have A24 and they have been largely successful along with some other indie projects and filmmakers, but the big budgets will always syphon to the big franchises. It’s nearly impossible to break new ground in Hollywood, what is anyone really expecting?

This isn’t a good take. There have been horrible and amazing films from every period. Everything everywhere at once, Spiderverse, Sinners, 28 years later, and more have been made with the last few years and they’re awesome.
Respect to Ridley for a good chunk of his earlier work. But he’s wrong. And honestly seems way too self aggrandizing.
