    1. I’m sure a 71 year old billionaire understands and cares about the daily struggles of the average Czech.

    2. no idea how people can see billionaire, and then think this guy is going into bat for us, you get what you pay for.

    3. When big money is allowed in elections, big money always wins. And the Billionaire class knows it.

    4. People watching America burn up in right wing flames and being like, let’s do that too!! What the fuck??

These people have to be straight buying the elections now. This is the new normal. Our ‚billionaire‘ needed the richest man on the planet though.

    6. Czechoslovakia uniting under Putin.

Let me guess: the Czechs voted against whatever is in power now. And then flip back in four five years

Cataline in ancient Rome has played out again and again in recent years. A populist elitist in Rome broke laws, scandal ensued and he appealed to the poor to back him to challenge the ruling elite (of which he was part of). It’s embarrassing that we haven’t learned 2100 years on, still falling for the same stupid play again and again.

Billionaires should be forced to spend time with the people who vote for them

    9. >He has rejected calls from SPD to hold a referendum on leaving the EU and NATO, but has said he would end the “Czech initiative” that has bought millions of artillery rounds from around the world for Ukraine with funding from Western donors.

Bad news. I hope another NATO country can take over this initiative to give Ukraine as much artillery ammo as they can.

    10. Why are people so stupid? Why would you ever think this man is going to make politics for you?

    11. Real interesting, Ukraine more likely to sever pipeline that feeds them now?

These people survived the cancer that was the USSR only to start smoking again.

    13. You get what you vote for. The problem is too many people become complacent within the safety of a true democracy and don’t realize that your baseline democracy is never guaranteed when you vote dictator.

Most of these voters never experienced the Iron Curtain or the outcome would have been much different.

Coming from a family who was purged in the pogrom from Usti nad Lebnam, when it was Aussig in 1945, let me say “May you have the government you deserve.”

I wonder what will be the new equivalent here for authoritarianism and neo-fascism.

    14. Interesting article. I’m not super familiar with Czech politics but do have some family from there and have visited a few times. There is certainly unease/concern/opposition/hostility to Muslim immigration and as noted in the article that likely played a role. This is something I expect we will see really increase around Europe over the next decade, and left of center Americans like myself will probably have a lot of trouble understanding it. Pair that with a tough economy for the average person and the groundwork for this sort of populist messaging is already done.

People will worship the billionaire who is robbing them, slash their own benefits, kill their own healthcare and applaud the rich as they get the tax cuts from all of the above. Just because it will hurt someone who is not like them, someone else, more.

    17. It’s sad watching both my current home and now my native home falling into this nonsense baboonery.

Another popularist facing jail time and using politics to avoid the consequences of his actions.

On a lighter note- they’ve got a party called the “Motorists” – they must be quite driven!!
