President Macron recently warned that democracies have been “incredibly naive” in entrusting our public discourse to platforms controlled by private tech companies—either American or Chinese—whose priorities don’t always align with democratic survival.

It raises an important question: how do we balance innovation and free speech with democratic sovereignty?

Thoughts on whether regulation, local alternatives, or platform accountability is the best path forward?

I agree. Social media is full of leftist/alt-right/far-right propaganda

      Leave left and right out.
Countries like Russia are heavily influencing public opinion via social media for their goals.

    7. So you will finance and develop a publicly owned social media network and tax the billionaires behind the private ones right?

    8. He’s right. Look at the amount of bots influencing people on social media and the spread of disinformation.

To be honest social media should probably be a public service and be funded with tax payer dollars considering how widely used and important it is for so many businesses. The problem is making governments agree to not collect every piece of data from it, if it was a public service.

    10. privacy rights and making news required to be factual as it had been in the past, are key ways to steer this ship

Tech companies today act like the church before we had secularism, controlling access to knowledge, shaping morality, and deciding societal norms.

Just as we separated church and state, we now need technosecularism, the separation of tech and state.

Otherwise we risk living under a new kind of digital theocracy.

This is the push and pull of a “free” but regulated market – you don’t want to have an overly intrusive government presence but, you don’t want shareholders to shape the public opinions, it’s very hard to strike a balance.

He doesn’t want to defend „democracy“… but to limit freedom of expression… many social networks may be subject to censorship but just as many are still free and this bothers him…. they have seen that they can no longer tell lies to citizens without being proven wrong in 5 minutes…

Social networks have become the Agora of the masses, of course we find good and bad there but we also find real criticism of the caste of idiots constituting the self-proclaimed and pseudo-right-thinking elite, it is certain that this does not please all these moralizing hypocrites.
