If someone irresponsible and dangerous rides a bike instead of drives, I can tell you which one I’d prefer to be hit by.

Likely because of the rise of Deliveroo/Just Eat/etc. – the structure of the apps (i.e make deliveries as quickly as possible) strongly encourages them to ride recklessly, they’re often on illegally modified e-bikes, in city centres (typically where the fast food restaurants they’re collecting from are) they’re bobbing and weaving around pedestrians in pedestrianised streets, and – not to be cruel – they’re very obviously recent arrivals and not accustomed to British traffic culture.
I actively avoid pedestrianised areas of towns now. Before COVID I never had to jump out of the way of someone on a bike. Since delivery apps „improved“ our lives, it’s routine. It’s one of those things where it’s a big enough change that you clearly notice it, but it’s small enough that you feel petty complaining about it.

I think this is a symptom of people becoming more self centred and arseholish in recent years, rather than something unique to Lycra enthusiasts.

We will get the usual apologists in here but let’s do a reality check.
I cycle in London multiple times a week.
The number of people that brazenly go through red lights, go through zebra crossings at speed with people on them, put themselves and other people in danger, is virtually every third or fourth cyclist I see. At times I am literally the only person waiting at the light.
Saying “well road users cause accidents too” is irrelevant. You are breaking the law, you are endangering other people. Take some goddamned accountability you utter cretins.

Curious on how many of these are caused by Deliveroo/UberEats riders. In Cardiff they race around (including on pedestrianised streets) wearing dark clothes with no lights, not using bells and often running red lights and zebra crossings.
By far the worst cyclists I’ve ever seen.

I don’t want to give any credence to the quality of the idiot delivery riders et al on basically unregistered motorbikes, but as a cycle commuter whose stops at lights pedestrians really really need to be more aware of their surroundings and not zombies on a phone.
These days we all need to be super aware at all times of everything, it’s a sad state of affairs but it’s where we are……

As pedestrian I’ve felt in danger from cyclists more often than I have from drivers, even when crossing the road.
My local council spent £££ on a new dedicated traffic-separated cycle lane, it has cycle traffic lights on it to stop cyclists so that when pedestrians get the green man they can safely cross the road and the cycle lane. Don’t think I’ve seen a single cyclist stop for those lights they just breeze on through them, the only time they ever stop is when forced to by the volume of pedestrians, otherwise they’ll try and weave their way in between pedestrians.
In reported road collisions in Great Britain in 2024 there were an estimated:
* 1,633 fatalities, an increase of 1% compared to 2023
* 29,537 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties, little change compared to 2023
* 128,375 casualties of all severities, a decline of 3% compared to 2023
For pedestrians v bicycle collisions – while all casualties are up, the KSI is the same as the previous year and the deaths are down from 4 to 1. The pedestrian v bus/coach all casualties were also up 57 to 712, HGVs were up slightly but everything else went down.

There are record numbers of cyclists, so it’s expected that there would be record numbers of injuries.
Remember the rate per cycling is very low, and pales in comparison to the number of people killed or injured by cars.
Without saying how many more people are cycling now than 5 years ago it’s a meaningless statistics.

603 injuries. That’s absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Willing to bet the majority of them were on shared paths which are a death trap for everyone.

I do wonder if there should be a cycling test like car users have. I had an optional cycling class in primary school but so many people don’t even seem to know basic rules of the road.

Doesn’t mean a huge amount without normalising for total distance cycled. My sense is that more people are cycling (thanks in part to more convenient urban cycle hire), and more deliveries are being done by bike. Injuries per mile cycled could remain constant and produce data like this.

Police would make more money from fines targetting cyclists at a red light than from motorists running a red light or speeding. Setting up a red light camera and a cycle checkpoint down the road would catch and prosecute 1 a minute in London.
Police on E-bikes should be detaining all bikers breaking the traffic laws, stopping drug dealers and detaining illegal workers, but they won’t willingly stop crime if they can help it.

I mean, ok, 600 incidents is 600 too many, but where’s their article telling us how terribly dangerous motor vehicles are?
I’m sick of all the reporting of every incident that involves a bike or e-bike as if they’re an awful social menace, while cars kill and injure way more people and apparently that’s not newsworthy or something to worry about.

orders of magnitude more. this is small potatoes.
Cyclists just fly along, ignore any rules of the road and pay 0 attention to pedestrians.
Not surprising
As a pedestrian I often see cyclists flouting the rules. I see accidents and near accidents literally every day.
As a Redditor I’m told by cyclists that cyclists are perfect and even if they break the rules it’s because they know how to break the rules safely.
Waiting for the crying “why are you worried about cyclists obeying red lights” and “cars are worse” crowd to chime in about how this doesn’t matter.
