    1. My mam is kind of a bellwether for the average Irish voter and she’s voting Connolly. It might be hers to lose.

Connolly will win, but only because of the sheer contempt or athapy the public hold Humphrey and Gavin

Such a dull election, all the candidates are boring… I guess that’s a price to pay to stop scrotes like McGregor running.

Also why does CC go as Independent when she was previously part of Labour and got nominated from their backing?

The establishment spent all week saying the debate was a draw, the public overwhelmingly thought Catherine Connolly won.

The establishment mocked Sinn Féin endorsing Catherine Connolly as not being a gamechanger.

The establishment have thrown everything at Catherine Connolly all week.

Yet here she is, polling 50%+ after Jim Gavin is eliminated. This is the chance to elect a President that sends a message to the establishment.

The Áras belongs to the people. Not FF/FG.

She’d be my natural inclination but she has such a tendency to shoot her mouth off. Prob still vote for her but feel I’ve little choice.

Connolly is nearly a good candidate, but I worry she has a tendency to say or do things that could seriously undermine our credibility on the international stage.

As for the other two, they’re uninspiring choices with little to show for themselves and no real presence or charisma. That said, they’d probably keep a low profile and manage their roles without drawing too much attention or causing controversy.

Honestly, I’m finding it hard to choose between the three. If a fourth, even moderately competent option were available, the decision would be simple.

Those „who won the debate“ numbers are an absolute massacre. 6% for Humphreys and 5% for Gavin, even the vast majority of their own party supporters couldn’t bring themselves to make a case for them.

    8. Uninspiring candidates.

No doubt Connolly was the best in the debate but some of her views are a bit concerning.

No one can hold a candle to Michael D, so any candidate will fall short by comparison. Catherine Connolly is by far the most intelligent, experienced and competent of the 3, and would be a worthy President imo. Nobody has the statesmanlike intellectual robustness of MDH.

It’s basically 1v2. Humphries will get transfers or Gavin will get transfers. Connolly will struggle

    11. Tricky_Sweet3025 on

Realistically what preference of FPV would she need to not lose out on transfers?

Anyone I’ve spoken to about it have said they’re either not voting or they haven’t made their mind up yet

Lots of chat, remember when SF self elected themselves, this could easily happen again.

I wouldn’t have voted for her but Mairéad McGuinness must be inconsolable

    15. Just shows how pathetic the other two are that people are still prepared to vote for her after the fiasco about her trying to employ an ex-con.

    16. I won’t vote for Connolly but thought she did better than the other two. This isn’t voting intentions 🤷‍♂️

    17. messinginhessen on

Connolly is a clown who takes her world view from Moscow and would rather Ukraine cease to resist Russian genocide so that all media attention can be directed purely towards Gaza.

She can’t criticise Russia without mentioning NATO but has no issue criticising NATO with mentioning Russia. Tells you all you need to know really.

    18. No matter who wins, I have a suspicion this will be a one term presidency.

If its CC, then I think there’s a good chance that she will draw enough controversy on herself that FG and FF will want to get rid of her. I am specifying them because they have a tradition of not running a candidate against the incumbent. Michael D received considerable support from FG voters in 2011 and both FF and FG were happy enough to see him stay in office in 2018. Right now, I don’t see that replicated.

Even at the moment, there seems to be a sense from many CC voters that they don’t agree with many of the things she says.

If it’s either of HH or JG, I feel that there is a reasonable prospect that the left opposition will want more of an interventionist figure in the manner of Michael D, and there would be an appetite for that too.

    19. Expect the entire political establishment and all the media that supports them to go all guns blazing on Connolly.

    20. IntentionFalse8822 on

It certainly looks like Connolly will win. But it is on the basis of the best of a bad lot. She will win because she is the protest candidate and the protest vote will come out. But I suspect even they will have buyers remorse fairly quickly into her presidency.

I think the president of Ireland should be able to speak Irish. This not so much an endorsement of Connely but a condemnation of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael having candidate unable to speak Irish.

    22. 30% undecided is important to highlight. There will be big moves before polling day.

    23. We love to laugh at the state of other nations but having Catherine Connolly potentially representing Ireland on the world stage is worrying. The other two are worse.

    24. I dont like any of the candidates but I can predict with 99.9% certainty that if Catherine Conolly wins she will contort in various way to publicly put both her feet in her mouth whenever she opens it.
This woman unequivocally backed Clare Daly for the 2024 EU elections.
Clare Daly got replayed on Russian state media regularly because she was seen as pro-russia post Ukraine invasion she has made her stance clear that she will opposed EU re-armement….. just a chance at Clare Daly’s EU political history indicates she has to be on the take from the Russians, Ukrainian government has her on a list of individuals spreading Russian disinformation, she supported the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014… she…. she voted against the EU resolution condemning Russias invasion of Ukraine and actively tried to push things through that would water down sanctions on Russia…. Catherine Conolly publicly and unequivocally supported this Woman’s run in 2024 (which she lost thankfully).

So as far as im concerned Conolly is either a dimwitted tool blinded be her own political ideologies to the reality of what Russia is doing or she is also on the Russian dime.
