I think on paper Rob Ashton is a great candidate for leadership, but after watching his Power & Politics interview I’m less enthusiastic. He didn’t articulate himself very well and came across as flat and a bit unserious. Still, I think it’s good that he’s entered the race and a lot can change in a few months of political practice.
This is the direction my riding swung after decades of consistent NDP support. And, it was entirely over frustration with bread and butter issues – and a feeling that the NDP has lost that thread.
Someone like Charlie Angus would have had a chance to sweep up votes during the Liberal collapse pre-Carney. It’s a shame they chose Singh over Angus, who had actually put in his dues. I’m glad another real labour activist is throwing his hat into the ring. Now, let’s not fuck it up again.
If a policy plank doesn’t raise *all* ships, put it in the bin. Get back to basics, concentrate the message around CoL and QoL. Nothing more, nothing less. Don’t make it just another widget in an overflowing basket of pet projects and priorities. We are really sick of identity politics, etc, from all sides. Please read the room, and this goes especially for the modern party apparatus.
Anyhow, that’s what it’d take for me to return to the fold. After 40 years supporting them at some level, provincial or federal, I see little in the current NDP that speaks to me.
Also, I can’t help but distain their policy of granting citizenship to all TFWs, foreign students, LMIA applicants, etc. We’ve seen too much abuse of these programs in order to undercut Canadian labour, especially in 2022. But, also in Harper’s 2008 expansion and Trudeau’s 2015 revision.
How can the NDP be the party of **Canadian** labour when it’s essentially endorsing replacement workers shipped in en masse to undercut us during the Pandemic labour squeeze? It was our one chance to finally take back a semblance of power and push wages up for our most economically vulnerable and our student workers…
If that NDP policy was applied with the same mentality we reserve for industry, these replacement workers would literally be called scabs. Who is traditionally anti-scab? Apparently, no longer the NDP.
At least, not yet. But we can hope.
Grass roots, kitchen table, these are features of a neighborhood association, not a national party of a country of 41 million people. NDP is obsolete in 21st century. Any NDPer who believes they should work towards winning a majority (or even minority), can also keep dreaming of winning the lottery.
Many so called ‚left-wingers‘ are realizing they are actually conservative.
They care about decent job conditions, about offering opportunities to the less fortunate, about protecting their language, values and their culture, about fighting against aggressive corporatism.
All the things the left is no longer fighting for.
The NDP needs to move a little bit toward the centre of the political spectrum to garnish voter interest from a wider range of people, and maybe focus on being the pro-worker party they once were.
All of these leftists don’t understand that a lot of these workers Pierre won over are more culturally conservative. Having a scruffy white guy won’t win over these people as long as the activists still have a foot hold over the party. Trust me I work in the auto sector and a lot of these people have all these green activism and woke stuff and people trying to cancel the past. Are they gunna end soft on crime and safe injection site activism and support for mass immigration ? Thats how you win steelworkers and auto workers back on your side. These people are economically left wing but culturally right wing and this guy doesn’t appear to be that.
I laughed at the concept that Poilievre is ‘eating the NDP’s lunch’. Shades of people writing the NDP obituary but casually forgetting history, identical to those who declared the death of Canadian conservatives / liberals when they have been wiped out electorally.
All the folks claiming the NDP aren’t a serious party will turn around and claim the Conservatives are. If they can’t admit that the CPC is just as if even more obsessed with identity politics than the NDP, then their opinion means nothing.
