Gazan is really proving McPherson’s point here. If soft criticism of identity politics you get called someone who justifies white supremacy you are engaging in “purity politics”.

McPherson wants to grow the party base after it lost official party status and Gazan is strictly opposed.
Honestly, I’m not sure NDP members understand how debilitating its for the party to have people like Gazan and Jenny Kwan out there as its most vocal representatives.
She has Notely’s support. I’m for her. Making the NDP more big tent is what is needed. They are too pigeonholed as a single issue party like the Greens. Time to offer a progressive voice for workers rather than the „worker“ Conservative party where supporters are voting their own rights away to their overlords.
Gazan really just proving McPherson’s point. I’ve never seen something turn the average voter off more than being forced into a race to the bottom of who is the most progressive or left. Subtracting people from your voter coalition instead of trying to see who you can add to it is loser politics.
As an inactive and disillusioned member of the NDP (see flare for clarity), I can attest to how fucking hard it is to be a part of this organization.
I stopped participating altogether because I was generally ignored if not outright dismissed. I can only assume that it’s because I look like a stereotypical conservative and tend to be abrasive and dispassionate.
This became 100% worse after I moved to Nunavut. Lori Idlout isn’t interested in representing me, and she’s all but said as much to my face.
McPherson wants teh NDP to win or have a possibility to win like the Praries and West NDP have right now. From BC to Manitoba.
I think McPherson is tapping into how a lot of people on the left feel with the „purity test“ comments, but more importantly: How else do you win elections other than inviting people in?
I read that Jack Layton (via a Charlie Angus article?) was obsessed with getting „butts in seats“, and I think the incoming NDP leader has to have that same obsession. I already like McPherson because I think a prairie ‚dipper could eat into the CPC base in the west, but she also seems like the strongest candidate so far.

This is the fundamental issue with her comments. For all you folks criticizing Gazan, this is the point she’s making.
What purity test is MacPherson referring to?
All MacPherson is doing by using this type of language is conceding to the right, she’s using conservative talking points to legitimize their batshit views, that the NDP is solely a party of identity politics. None of which is true.
I think Gazan and other progressives would definitely say the party has to work on their messaging, on how to communicate their goals with folks who would have traditionally voted for the NDP but have drifted to the CPC. But using a vaguely defined term, typically a dogwhistle from the right, is not productive especially when she still refuses to provide any more context or a clear example if what exactly she means.
MacPhersons been an avid supporter of Palestine, would she condone someone running for the party who’s pro-Israel? Is that a purity test? Would she consider that non-negotiable?

As a conservative this is great. As long as the NDP remains a dumpster fire the LPC can keep moving right with little risk of losing many votes. Both major parties can be more in line with my views.
