Angesichts der dunklen Abende auf uns, eine freundliche Anmerkung für alle Straßenbenutzer der Realität, dunkle Kleidung auf Fahrrädern/Rollern usw. zu tragen usw. Wenn dieser Beitrag sogar eine Person dazu ermutigen könnte, ein Hi -Vis anzuziehen, wäre es ein Erfolg.
Dies soll keine Debatte zwischen dem Verhalten zwischen Straßenbenutzern auslösen, nur um hervorzuheben, inwieweit bestimmte Straßenbenutzer auch mit Autolichten hinter ihnen nicht gesehen werden können.

I get free hi vis’ in work – keep them in the car boot for this reason – if I can stop and just give one out, I’ll do so. (It’s country roads I’m on mostly!).

In my experience…….me wearing hi viz and a bright red cycling jacket and with front and rear lights is not the panacea you think it is.
Totally agree. Not to be pedantic but for dark evenings and nights, reflective gear is much better than high visibility clothing which is more for daytime use.
I’m a cyclist and a motorist and the amount of cyclists and scooterists(?) who are near invisible is shocking. The RSA literally give this stuff out for free! Stock seems to be low now but check over the next few days.

Tell me OP how do you see dark cars in the dark?
They should have lights on them, hi vis is a situationally effective extra.

Fair play OP. Looking out for others is commendable
You see the problem is the guy behind the wheel looking down at his phone is gonna plough into you regardless of Hi-Vis or not.
Having a (good) bicycle light is legally required in the hours of darkness and should be enough. If you’re driving around and having difficulty spotting bicycle lights then maybe reconsider driving at nighttime.
But for drivers not paying attention, a Lighthouse beacon won’t even work – never mind Hi-Vis.
I don’t really care if you wear Hi-Vis or not, but the absolute insistence on Hi-Vis as this magic anti-crash device by the powers that be (RSA, Gardaí) shifts responsibility to only the person cycling. Instead of a balance of the cyclists needs to have a light, but for drivers to slow down, keep alert & watch out for vulnerable road users.
When cases of a person cycling getting killed or injured by a drive we hear mentions of dark or light clothing on the person cycling, Hi-Vis or not.
So even though a person may cycle with a powerful rear light, the fact they don’t have Hi-Vis on will be a factor in a court case – irrespective of drive behaviour.
I almost cleaned out a woman in dark clothes, no lights, no high vis last year. Saw her at the last second. I genuinely remember shouting “get a light” whether she heard me or not. But it was one of the scariest experiences I’ve had driving.
