    1. So let me get this straight:

Canada Post has no (current) experience with retail banking. It has no banking systems, software, insurance… or anything else to do with banking. It has no banking clients. Canada post has been shown to not deliver any of the services it offers in a competitive manner.

… But there are people out there who believe that it will succeed in operating retail bank branches precisely in locations that actual banks (the ones that *do* have systems and experience) deem so unprofitable they don’t try to operate there or have closed their branches?

      Wow.

      >This plan for disembowelling Canada Post was first advanced in 2013 by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, which was always keen to cut public services and hand them over to the private sector.

this was going to community mailboxes btw

      >One solution to Canada Post’s financial difficulties would be for it to maintain a properly-paid unionized workforce, and to make up any shortfall by offering new services — particularly banking — through its network of postal outlets.

i dont really think a workforce used to doing postal work could transition to running a bank tbh

      >Postal banks continue to operate successfully in about 100 countries, with particularly profitable postal banks in France and Japan.

apparently this is true both make over a billion a year fascinating

the issue with this is the underlying mail delivery business still needs to be changed irrelevant of postal banking so maybe its worth exploring but it shoudlnt stop the end of daily mail, closure of some suburban post offices or going ahead with community mail boxes IMO

My goodness, rabble is REALLY grasping at straws aren’t they?

Have they really lost all of their top talent to the private sector that the best they can come up with is, „HeY, LeT’s dO PoStAl BaNkInG AgAiN!“

What next, rabble… are you going to advocate for replacing automobiles with the horse-and-carriage… *because they’re so much more ORGANIC*.

These are the sort of dumb, out-of-touch takes you find on BlueSky posted by (mostly) white liberals who still wear surgical masks when they go for a walk outside.

EDIT: I now see that this was a Linda McQuaig article originally from TheStar. Well, my comments still stand. She’s one of the most out-of-touch columnists employed by the Star, second to perhaps Heather Mallick

There seems once again an attempt of the union to justify the status quo rather than accepting change. Entering in the banking system would require a substantial tax payers investments without even an assurance that the demand will follow.

    5. Why would Canada Post get into the banking business with postal banking? It may have worked prior to 1969, but a lot of banking is now digital, with retail branches changed to be more about personal finance services rather than traditional banking needs.

Sure, it could serve a need with benefitting rural communities, and we should do something about that if there is a lack of access. But I’m not sure if postal banking is the solution. They would be competing with credit unions which already operate on razor thin margins, so I’m not sure interest rates lower than they offer is sustainable.

      Really….its an outdated idea for a reason…
