Unless Turkey shits on US, I don’t believe NATO will leave their second biggest power alone.

  2. Yeah, I wouldn’t be so sure about the the US right now. Drump.seems awfully respectful towards dictators.

There is a reason why Turks are building their own air power. The main idea of staying in NATO for Turkiye today is to make sure NATO isn’t the enemy.

  4. Either way, the fact remains. Thank you, Turkey, for saving the Turkish Cypriots from the Greek genocide

  5. If Israel thinks that it is easy to bomb Turkey left and right like it has done to the proxy nations like Qatar and Syria, it would be a big mistake. Whether you like the regime or not In Turkey, it is a unitary nation-state unlike the other religious and divided states that Israel used to bomb and get over it. It is impossible to come to terms with Turkey by using brute force. The scale of its military capabilities are a magnitude more than all its rivals combined.

When it comes to national security, war and expansionism, Turkey doesn’t even care about its economy or international relations. And I am sure Israel is not stupid either to bring Turkey in such a state.

  6. When I see these kind of questions, the first thing I know I will find in the comments is nationalism and biases. There is rarely any cold analysis, critical thinking and knowledge about the countries involved.

    Would NATO defend Turkey?

    The answer is…IT DEPENDS!

If Russia or China attack Turkey, NATO will do everything possible (short of going to a nuclear war) to help and defend Turkey! If Israel attacks Turkey – organizes a bombing raid for example – then NATO’s response will be much more nuanced and varied. Some countries, like France will not support Turkey at all and some countries like the US, will do everything possible to resolve the incident peacefully with a more favourable bias towards Israel.

People need to know that Turkey is in NATO only because of the USSR. Turkey has been trying to be as sovereign as possible given that there are bigger sharks in the sea and has done so consistently. During what the Turks call „Turkish War of Liberation“, USSR’s military assistance was key to enabling Ataturk to wage a successful war. The Soviets did that in the hope that they will be able to attract Turkey in their sphere of influence. What happened however, is that as soon as the Turks won that war, they turned around, killed their own communists and kicked the Soviets out. Some time after that, they joined NATO. Now that the Soviet Union is gone and Europe does not want Turkey in the EU, Turkey is again turning around and looking for a new role. Erdogan has decided that Turkey should be more of a neutral player and seek it’s future in the East with the hope of creating some sort of a union with other Turkic speaking and/or Islamic countries. All these things make Turkey more of a liability than an asset to NATO. For the last 20-30 years, Turkey has been benefiting from it’s NATO membership much more than NATO has benefited from having Turkey as a member. The Turkish military and political leadership understand this and that’s why their rhetoric and criticism against the West (and Israel) has not been backed up by any real actions and this is why it is very unlikely that Turkey will do something that would force Israel’s hand. Both countries are 1 phone call away from having the spare parts, certain type of ammunitions and satellite coms for their planes and tanks suspended, which will ensure that after couple of weeks of conflict, they will no longer be able to use their weapons effectivity.

  7. All of this doesn’t mean reunification, it means mass civilian casualties, political turmoil and economic catastrophe – no point in administering a place that is completely destroyed.

This type of talk is extremely dangerous and was used against this poor island in the past. Do not buy into the narrative, which results in another tragic and avoidable situation.

Now Chicken Little will shut up.

  8. Wow, that’s quite a delusional take. The reality is that it’s not Turkey that needs NATO for protection—it’s the other way around.

Good thing ! Let’s hope turkey becomes even more isolated and threatened !

Not to shoot the messenger, but I think I will. The OP is an Armenian from the Diaspora, most likely, also Russophilic, but she conveniently brushes over at the fact that Russia did not come to Armenia’s rescue when they were losing battles in Karabagh. Now others of her kin are trying to portray Azerbaijan as a „Russian ally“ and try to distance themselves from Russia.

Now, the idea is to showcase NATO as toothless and useless as the CSTO. That might be the case, as the alliance has never been truly tested before. But CSTO has been, and Armenia has been rebuked just the same.

This post was made within the context of a Turkish-Israeli altercation on Turkish soil. Does not include scenarios in which Turkish troops are attacked on Cyprus, which might very well happen. That’s why Turkey should leave as soon as possible and concentrate on the defense of the home borders.

  11. There’s no way this is true considering that Turkey is NATO’s second largest army, and has the most Strategic position.

    Also who would defend Cyprus?

  12. What if Turkiye does not defend Europe? They need Turkiye so much for their sake..

  13. Thick-Dimension9661 on

The people here all happy about the case for war, guess who Israel isn’t defending: Cyprus. Look at what is happening to the Druze

I just love seeing armchair politicians on reddit debating in what way people that have no way of ever interacting with themselves should die in a war lmao. Some of you bunch are insane if you think any politician, turkish or european, saying shit like this isnt blatant warmongering for the sake of scoring some brownie points from some far right extremist group.

Yesterday in r/europe there were people genuinely suggesting that asylum seekers should just fucking die instead of escaping to europe, and that doing so is the proper thing to do with hundreds of upvotes. Some of you guys are damn scary with your takes.

An Israeli strategic advisor writing for a Greek newspaper is hardly going to have the most impartial take on Turkeys relationship with NATO.

Also, just because he worked as a contractor for a firm that drafted a report that might’ve passed by Macrons desk does not make him a „former advisor of Macron“

  16. This is immensely stupid. With Turkey in NATO you do not have to worry about Turkey joining Russia, or China. If Turkey is not in NATO it will not be Turkey by itself, it will be Turkey switching sides. Can Europe afford to loose the second largest infantry supply? Compared to other European countries (I am looking at you Germany) Turkey has a more battle ready force. Is Europe willing to push away Turkey into the enemy camp when they need it most? I doubt it.

  17. Gullible-Voter on

Israel would not attack Turkey directly but would have a proxy preferably Greece and Cyprus.

The hatred of the Europeans against the Turks is more than 500 years old. The problem of the French is they don’t have an intellectual filter for their feelings. In somehow it is good for the Turks because there are still some Turks who believe they can a be a member of the European Union. Mr Erdogan liberated them from the IMF. He is almost 80% liberated them the Arm Embargo they use against them. Türkiye is a member of NATO because of America for having a border with the ex Soviet Union and now for pragmatic reason for being the second largest force of the union. When it comes to Israel there is no question which side the American will defend. For war with Russia it is safe to say they would like both to destroy themselves and watch from the Television sets. He is right NATO will not defend Türkiye I agree with him. Türkiye to be a global power need to find a solution for the Turkish Lira.

Israel is a lot of things but stupid isn’t one of them, they wouldn’t attack NATO country.

  20. It has to, otherwise NATO is dead. And what a stupid statement, it just undermines the legitimacy of the alliance.

  21. The only thead to cyprus is israel. Be careful. they already bought a lot of land in cyprus. In palastine was also the same at the beginning.

  22. I have never seen a worse military analysis from armchair generals in my life than OP.

  23. First and foremost, I wish all the success to Turkey, I personally find your journey as a country is impressive and I hope that you keep moving from on success to another.

Second point; regardless of whom America like or not, Israel is already not popular with many NATO countries, so if the US breaks the treaty AND alone itself with a country that is an enemy of a NATO state, the US will basically would have lost its superiority and the global power scale will shift.

Guess what, on top of turkey being one of the highest military powers, the US is not the only power player in the world and I can think of few countries that would jump to fill the space that would be left behind by a broken US treaty

The internet has been a more effective tool at political subversion than any act of direct foreign espionage.

Now any sort of person from any part of the world can attempt to sow division and discontent across places for their specific needs.

I stopped giving any meaningful thought to anything i read on social media, and i advise everybody else here does the same.

You have to wonder, what was the intent behind this post? Whom does the conclusion that i came to after seeing this post benefit?

I love when these outlets describe Erdoğan as “someone they don’t or can’t control”. He just bought 300 Boeing planes for tens of billions and signed a deal that states Turkey will buy %10 of all its natural gas from US until 2040 just 1 week ago, and American gas costs three times the price of russian or Iranian gas. Trump also said directly in front of journalists that “Erdogan knows rigged elections better than anyone on this planet”. “People here still say “Tourkish menance”, no, it’s actually pretty american.

  26. Some people who don’t know are probably wondering what happened in Cyprus in the past.

(The Sun, 03/09/1974) „What happened in Cyprus during the Coup D’etat, can not be named, it can only be called as dirty and inhuman.“

(French Soir, July 24, 1974) „The Greeks burned Turkish mosques and set fire to Turkish homes in the villages around Famagusta. Defenseless Turkish villagers who have weapons live in an atmosphere of terror and they evacuate their homes and go and live in tents in the forest. The Greeks actions are a shame to humanity.“

(23rd July 1974 the Washington Post reported) „In a Greek raid on a small Turkish village near Limassol 36 people out of a population of 200 were killed. The Greeks said that they had been given orders to kill the inhabitants of the Turkish villages before the Turkish forces arrived.“
