Criticizing Israel or Zionism is not automatically antisemitic, but it’s become very obvious to me that opportunistic antisemites are using that topic to spread hate against Jews in general. Including against Jewish Canadians that have no ties to Israel whatsoever. And unfortunately the slogan “anti-Zionism is not antisemitism” has become an easy way to dismiss and ignore or reframe actual examples of real antisemitism, like the recent attack on an elderly Jewish woman in an Ottawa grocery store.

So could the proposed bill go too far? Sure. But there is a real problem here, it’s not just an attempt to shut down legitimate pro-Palestine protests.
