I’m aware of situations where very wealthy ethnic minorities, who would otherwise be able to afford volunteering or similar experiences, have been granted these opportunities over poor white individuals.
As a country, we’ve become so hyperfocused on race and ‚racism‘ we’ve lost sight on fairness and true equality.
Every % less white people is a % less chance your child can get the job of their dreams. Remind me again why any white person would support „diversity“.
I’m not jumping into the discussion about whether this is ok, but I want to point out that this headline is deliberately worded to fuel the current culture war. The program in question is specifically for black people, or mixed-race people with black heritage. So it excludes Asian people too, but the Telegraph’s slant makes it seem specifically anti-white.
How the fuck does this not fall foul of racial discrimination laws?

The white population is now under represented. With only 76.7% in the system being white when the population of the UK is 81.7% white.
I see that once again the people who constantly complain how everyone is offended by everything these days are on the lookout for something to be offended about again.
Why’d you say it like that bro? You people just want to sow hatred and discourse. It’s a black heritage specific program, which nobody has a problem with until they feel like inciting public unrest. It’s not „white students blocked“ it’s „this is an opportunity for black students specifically“ which is very common in multiple sectors/places and isn’t an indication of the political climate in any way. There are many similar opportunities for other ethnicities, or for specific wealth brackets. The reason why there are some like this is because there is usually a few per job sector for every bracket of people commonly discriminated against in some way shape or form – ethnicity, race, class, sexism, wealth – in the name of equality. It’s not black people specific or anything. There will be other opportunities for people living in low income areas for example, or people in the care sector. Hell, Oxbridge does the exact same thing and it’s been going on for years!
Newspapers like the telegram want you to believe that this is the start of the end, that the „woke liberals“ have started discriminating against white people so they have to ‚fight back‘ against it, but these are just basic, baseline inclusivity policies that we’ve had for a decade or longer with little issue or kerfuffle. It’s only when a rising political party will specifically thrive off more discourse and misinformation to further their campaign goals is when we start seeing headlines like these come out again. It’s actually so annoying, this „culture war“ bs genuinely sickens me.
This is how ethno nats win. Progressives need to realise „Race consciousness“ doesn’t only work one way. So it’s better to stay clear of it. Be conscious of prejudice and the law should reflect only that.

Typical misleading headline to try and invent a fake race war.
The council run multiple work experience schemes, which help target minorities that are underrepresented in the industry. Yes, that includes Black people. There are also other schemes that exist to support people from lower socio-economic groups.
It’s an important scheme to make sure that it’s not only privileged rich white people who get opportunities in lucrative careers. Anyone who thinks that this is ‘racist’, either doesn’t understand what the scheme is for, or simply doesn’t like black people.
Having read the article, it seems to say they have other schemes and programmes specially targeted at working-class and white people from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
If they have more schemes that are open compared to this singular one that is not, does that not mean their training is attempting to reflect the make up of the British population.
This headline is purposefully intended to create anger and it would be good to discuss the issues with these kind of schemes openly and with respect rather than some of the comments here which make it sound like there are no Black British people.

There are schemes for ALL underrepresented groups (gender, social mobility, disability) to enter the bar, not just black people.

Lol, so not just white people. Only one ethnic minority is allowed to join the internship. How is this not considered discrimination? Race is a protected characteristic.

They are referring to one of the schemes – the one specifically aimed at giving black minorities an opportunity – they are hugely underrepresented in the profession.
There are other programmes running in parallel – e.g. aimed at lower socio-economic demographic, at women and so on.
When I worked in large accountancy firm, we had the same/similar programmes running. They were brilliant – we’d proactively reach out to underrepresented communities – those kids usually would have no idea about opportunities available, their parents neither. I know so many who came in as apprentices or grads that were supported through uni that went on to build careers, become leaders etc. Their starting position was disadvantaged and they wouldn’t be able to succeed without such targeted programmes.
As someone who has only ever voted for leftwing parties i just have to say I truly despise this kind of thing. It’s so indicative of wider trends in society and I really worry for the future.
This is straight up, without further qualification needed, discrimination against white people. People who say DEI essentially equals making sure there are less white men are correct, that isn’t a right wing fantasy.

This is quite common though, many work experience opportunities, internships, placements, are only open to ethnic minorities. This is not a unique event.
Discrimination based on race is against the law. Don’t care what the excuses are, racism is racism.
I mean this is anti-white racism disguised as diversity.
Structural issues exist and if they want to create programs to increase diversity I’m not gonna argue the principle. It’s their choice.
It is disgusting how these diversity or equality schemes are always designed to punch down at the expense of the next generation or people at the bottom of the progression chain, and never at the people who have already benefited and continue to benefit from alleged inequality.

Can one of the peons that runs the Daily Telegraph reddit account tell us how many internships they offer for **anyone** from a low-income background? And do they offer living expenses for those who aren’t London-based?

So it’s a program specifically meant for racial inclusion. Here’s the question though – is this the only work experience program on offer, or is it an extra one offered on top of a normal open access one?

So it’s the latter (unless she’s lying). It’s an extra program being offered to a group historically and presently underrepresented in this profession, not a case of white people just being completely excluded. What a shock, Rupert Lowe’s lying again.
To those complaining about classism – agreed. Private school attendees are massively overrepresented at the Bar (closest approximation I can find to class background). This country doesn’t give a shit about poor people. But that doesn’t mean racism doesn’t exist, and it’s not an either-or situation – we can address both (and sexism, homophobia etc).
“Good job I have rich white barrister friends that will give my rich white children summer internships” (this is according to a mutual acquaintance).
The game is rigged and there’s no point pretending. Let’s also not pretend black lawyers aren’t prioritizing black kids for internships. It’s not race problem anymore – it’s a rich vs. poor problem.
I’m a white working class male pursuing the Criminal Bar. I’ve never benefited from any scheme (I’m sure some are out there)
I don’t mind. I don’t mind because I can finally say, when I’m a pupil barrister, I fought for every inch. I’ve already fought for a lot of work experience, networking, competitions and doing well at Uni.
This is a really, really tough vocation, and it will give me immense satisfaction to finally accomplish what I’ve set out to do with only myself to applaud.
When the two child limit was mentioned as set to be scrapped yesterday everyone was up in arms. Now everyone cares about poor white kids.
What’s stopping white working class people who are now lawyers (or any other field) from creating a scheme for them?
