> According to a photo of a private text on the phone of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Argentina responded to the treasury secretary’s $20 billion bailout by turning around and removing its export taxes on soybeans and striking a huge new deal with China. That diminished the price of U.S. soybeans and weakened U.S. trade leverage with China, which immediately pulled out of its existing arrangements with soybean farmers in America’s heartland.
Waiting to hear MAGA spin this as „Good for the USA“ as Republican soybean farmers in the US prepare to lose everything thanks to Trump.
Wow this is actually really bad. We lost around 40% of our soybean exports since the last tariff war and closed a lot of farms, this is going to spell the end of the survivors, most of whom probably voted Trump ironically.
Of course the White House got played. Trump thinks he can bully people into what he wants. Unfortunately, he is dealing with smarter people that don’t need him.
When the incompetent rule…
Well it turns out that if you spend years dicking around your customers then they will take their business elsewhere.
Maybe a dude with dozens of scam product lines wasn’t the best pick to „run America like a business.“ 🤔
The Orange One most likely doesn’t know what soybeans are, therefore won’t give a shit
We don’t need to sell soybeans when we have AI. AI fixes everything!
MAGA – Make Argentina Great Again
There’s an episode of Columbo from the 70’s wherein a character makes a joke about how reliable the soybean sales to China are in relation to some really chaotic event that happened for that case….I’ve been thinking about that scene a lot this week.
We are clean on opsec… ffs
The hubris of MAGA world continues.
Ok admittedly I haven’t read up on a lot about this but I still do not understand why we are bailing out Argentina. Like what’s the incentive for Trump to give them a bunch of free cash like this?
Good, give those people what they voted for.
I’m sure that US farmers will love this. Between this, tariffs, and the elimination of USAID, one of its major functions was to buy US agricultural products to be provided as food aid – the Trump administration has really fucked over farmers.
The most incompetent administration in US history.
None of these people know what they are doing
Laughing stock of the world, ladies and gents
These farmers got fucked during trumps first term and got bailed out. Instead of learning from that, they kept doing the same and shockingly voted for trump again. Now they’ll get another handout, learn nothing, and vote for trump again because other people getting the same help is communism
American farmers are not selling their soybeans because of Trumps idiotic trade war. Had China not bought them from Argentina they would have just bought more from Brasil, or anywhere else, other than the US.
Did the administration really „get played“?
I think that gives too little agency to the Trump admin.
Trump doesn’t give a shit about Americans, he only cares about himself.
Milei cupped Trumps nuts and told him how great he was and how similar his economic ideas were, so Trump is helping him.
Trump probably isn’t even aware about any of this stuff with soybeans, and wouldn’t care if someone tried to explain.
Quite Frankly no partially competent person would have put the country in this position in the first place

>“I know the best people. I know the best managers. I know the best dealmakers. I know people who will make us so strong. I know guys that are so good.“
President Donald J Trump, June 2015
Seems like a bad idea for Argentina to fuck around with the US and specifically this administration that is actively looking for a war.
OPM. Other people’s money. Trumps mantra since art of the deal.
Deny
Deny
Deny-Roy cohn taught him that.
He takes all our money and will not admit to shit storm of unpaid bills and a zero bank account
America is the „Atlantic City“ of North america. Thanks DTJ
Non-players, getting played!!!
The art of the steal!
Can a person short soybean futures?
I haven’t seen anything to support Congress authorizing 20 billion for Argentina. In addition, the fact that there’s an effort to bail out Argentina (which has universal health care) with our tax dollars that are prevented from giving us universal health care shouldn’t be lost on anyone, especially American Farmers who are about to lose their customers in China for good.
They’ll need bail outs forever due to Trump’s handy work.
That’s bc they’re fucking idiots
US farmers will be fine. Biggest welfare queens around.
Milei has been boosted by Atlas Network and Heritage Foundation. Atlas is another DC-based consortium of 500 global think tanks that Heritage formerly partnered with — the two share similar ideology and donors. American taxpayers will be forced to rescue failed corrupt dictatorial “libertarians” like Milei and Orban who are hailed by Atlas and Heritage to boost their re-election odds. Both administrations follow a P25ish playbook so Americans can see where their future is heading. Milei, who was lauded by MAGA for taking a chainsaw to his government and for his austerity measures that had pensioners crying in the street about their futures, was ducking rocks recently. Leaked audio referenced administrators’ taking kickbacks, how his sister was skimming from the country’s disabled and that Milei knew about it — not to mention his own cryptocurrency scam. Guess there’s a reason he is called the Donald Trump of Argentina.
No.
If you planted soybeans this year in the US you did so with the knowledge that the pricing/salability was very very unstable. Additionally, because of Trump’s stupid on again, off again, Canadian tariffs; soybean planting across the US was delayed and reduced. Why? Because the only cost effective fertilizer for soybeans comes from Western Canada. Literally 90% of the required fertilizer is imported. If you applied any tariff – and the tariff percentage kept changing – you made soybeans unprofitable.
So every farmer in the US knew before planting that the soybean market was unstable at best, and this every farmer did a couple things; (1) reduced their soybean acreage; and (2) presold a percentage of their crop. It’s not really the farmers who are in trouble. It’s the wholesalers.
The real problem is that the US soybean industry exists to service US needs (which are substantial) and to ship to China and India in very large quantities. Can it switch to smaller foreign purchasers? Yes, but not easily, and not without high costs. It will be like telling the US auto companies that they can’t sell any more pickup trucks and all cars must get 30 mpg. They can do it, but it takes time and a lot of money to change. And, it’s not a surprise.
China’s switch to South America is a direct result of Trump’s gamesmanship (and stupidity) in his first administration. Since 2018, China literally has built two large ports in Brazil to handle its soybean purchases. Remember Trump being upset that China was using the Panama Canal? We were threatening to invade Panama. What is China using it for? To ship soybeans from Brazil. None of this is a surprise to anyone with half a brain.
So – no – actual farmers don’t need help. If they were really were stupid enough to ignore all of the obvious evidence that the foreign soybean market was going through a huge shift this year then they deserve to fail. No one planted soybeans this year without knowing the big risk they were taking.
Yes, the grain dealers need to be creating new buyer/seller relationships with other countries, and yes that too is a problem because of Trump’s stupidity with foreign relations. Remember all the tariffs, including on islands only inhabited by penguins? So, if you want to help the soybean industry (farmers can plant other crops) then the government needs to work to create new markets, and help with the necessary infrastructure changes required to service those markets. We will never again be shipping mass quantities of soybeans to China.
For that you can thank Trump.
Those soybean farmers would still vote for Trump even after he bankrupted them.
There is literally nothing that he can do that will stop them from voting against there own self interest.
We bailed them out in part because one of Bessant’s investor buddies was going to lose his shirt… So sucks for the rest of us sending $20b to Argentina after gutting all domestic aid and research. But the admin really doesn’t care.
Wait now, I thought Argentina was doing so great, so fantastic, and amazingly well according to Trump, under the dickhead fascist with stupid hair and a chainsaw they have down there? Why are we bailing them out?
My reaction to this story is that scene from the Money Pit, with Tom Hanks and Shelly Long staring into the hole in the floor, laughing maniacally.
