Who are the gentlemen shaking hands with the Nazis?
I knew the dates but until now somehow never realised that not even a whole year passed between this and the Invasion of Poland.
People tend to forget that pretty much all neighbours of Czechoslovakia were interested in carving them up, they were very multi ethnic and a lot of places had non czech or slovakian majorities.
This is where the saying „About us, without us“ came from. (in czech: O nás, bez nás)
Whats sad is that western nations seemingly have learned nothing. You dont play ball with an expansionist nation. Its a very similar situation once again where major european nations are too afraid or disinterested in properly helping a smaller nation who is under attack.
A lesson that Ukraine does not want to repeat, with Russia.

At least Europe never went to war against nazi Germany. It would have been tragically embarassing if war started anyway not even 1 year later
A tragic story.
But at least the Poles didn’t hold joint parades with the Germans.
This is a reminder that so-called de-escalation and indulgences don’t work that well with aggressive regimes like Russian.
Abandoned would have been nice. They were strong-armed by the „allies“ to give Hitler what he wanted to save the „peace in our time“ or else.

What do Czech people think about President Beneš? It seems like he was too lenient — first with the Nazis, then with the Communists
Czechs and Slovaks under NATO protection now. And the Poles and Baltic States. They haven’t been invaded since joining.
Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova should’ve also rushed to join NATO in the early 2000’s when Russia was weaker and couldn’t do anything about NATO expansion.
I wonder how it would’ve been if Czechoslovakia would’ve rejected the treaty. Would’ve they been able to survive with Allied help?

Abandoned? Not only. They both said that if Hitler attacks Czechoslovakia, they wont help. This is how Hitler got their blessing without even firing a shot and could save the energy for conquering France

Just watched Munich – Edge of War, this weekend. Even more reason to further look into it.
Thankfully we eventually beat the Nazi’s and then gave the Soviets all of Eastern Europe.
What is abondend?
In hindsight , it is a great thing that Munich is remembered as an infamy.
I wonder how many would have thought that on the moment though. I don’t mean Churchill (war or dishonor) or even Daladier who famously cursed French people for their stupidity applauding him on his return, but people in the street who did not want to pay the price of war. Now we know it would have been best to draw a line in the sand then. But when you live the moment, you don’t want to contemplate millions of death, including yours potentially.
Coming back to my point about this being great, the reluctant majority can now be told to look back on this and make a choice when Putin starts applying pressure on Moldova, Romania, Estonia or Poland….

The thing is public opinion in Britain and France completely swung between this time and a year later towards „no more sacrificed nations to the Nazis“. It was just pure hopium. But after Kristallnacht and the occupation of the rest of Czechoslovakia in March 1939 all the hopes were gone. It’s like Orwell said, everyone bashing Chamberlain forgot that at the time the Munich agreement was the most popular idea.
If the Czechoslovaks had fought public opinion probably would have been sympathetic to them in Britain and France. Idk what would have happened then.

Wasnt it the Sudetenland? No less shameful, as it left the rest of Czechoslovakia defenceless, but are we correct?
They were just scared shitless of the war man. 1/3rd of France was utterly destroyed by the previous conflict, and the political chaos of the 3rd French Republic wasn’t of any help to generate some kind of consensus regarding a military response.

Sometimes, we love to generalise, relativise how Europe just ended WW1, and cram years of history in one sentence! And no, I’m not excusing or condoning what happened, but it wasn’t that black and white! It’s funny how, in hindsight, we all know what would be the best course of action!
