Seriously, you cannot tell by headline alone if a story is the Onion or not. How do you even manage to eat a passport?

Having worked in an airport for many years this really isn’t that uncommon. I remember an Iranian man who ate his passport in front of me.
Huge amounts get flushed as well

Another confirmation of why I never liked flying with Ryanair, and I never will.

A common occurrence, they do it to become undocumented – believing it’ll give them a greater chance of staying in the destination country, as deportation was made more difficult.

Why don’t they take fingerprints of every passenger before takeoff and after landing? If somebody destroys their passport they can be flown to the initial airport in no time and leave them there.

Isn’t think just the natural end point for charging us for every little piece of kit on an airplane? First they came for our pretzels, then they came for our drinks… this seems like a natural next step. 😉
