SS: New Zealand says it won’t yet recognise a Palestinian state, with Foreign Minister Winston Peters citing the war in Gaza, Hamas’s control and uncertainty over the future. He warned recognition now could harden positions and hinder a ceasefire.

PM Christopher Luxon stressed recognition is a matter of “when, not if.” The move leaves New Zealand out of step with Australia, Canada, and Britain, which recognised Palestine this week.

The Labour opposition slammed the decision, calling it a failure of leadership.

New Zealand always plays cautious. They wait till everyone else moves then decide. Saying too many questions is just code for not wanting to upset allies. Recognition is cheap compared to actual aid or policy change. But even cheap symbolic moves they avoid. Shows how timid western politics has become.
