    1. I built this dataset by starting with the current list of UN-recognized sovereign states (plus widely treated de facto states like Kosovo and Palestine). For each country, I took its regime classification from the Economist Intelligence Unit’s **Democracy Index 2023,** merging their four buckets into three (Democracy = full + flawed, Hybrid = unchanged, Authoritarian = unchanged). Where EIU doesn’t cover a microstate or has ambiguous data, I used the consensus view from political science sources (e.g., Freedom House, academic papers) and major news outlets. Regions were manually grouped into six broad areas (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and MENA) to make charts cleaner.
