All the stuff that went up because of COVID and then oil prices has mysteriously stayed up once those things went back to normal.
Perhaps this is one of those times when a massive windfall tax would be worth putting in place.
Competition is meant to keep prices low, but based on anecdotal evidence in local area, it isn’t working. I know of a garage next to a major oil refinery that makes the stuff, which charges 10 or more pence per litre than the cheapest in the area. Worse still, the garage is part of the same company that own the Refinery!
I don’t deny lower fuel prices would encourage driving and have an adverse affect on pollution etc, but stopping the price gouging by fuel companies would be a big win for Labour.
There’s 2 Sainsbury’s supermarkets near me, 5 miles away from each other down an A road and they have a 10p difference between them. The cheaper one is near a Tesco and the more expensive one isn’t near any other supermarket petrol station.

ever since Issa brothers bought asda it’s absolutely fucked the market and there’s less competitive pricing. It’s even worse now in Cambridge now they seem to be doing regional pricing, it’s cheaper literally on an A1 service station lol, head 5 miles out to Ely it’s 5p/litre cheaper
Fuel prices have always risen like a rocket and fallen like a feather.
I expect them to make money from it but I have heard them in the past saying there is nothing that can be done. They say the price they pay is set a year in advance so they cant drop their prices now that it is cheap because they brought it when it was expensive. But a year later they keep the price the same and say that as the price they pay is now high they have to keep prices high even though when they brought it the price was lower.
I wouldn’t mind so much if they were at least honest about ripping us off but they just talk nonsense all the time.
Meanwhile, the Labour Govt are busy chasing Farage cult voters who will never vote for them.
For a bit of context, £1.33 is historically very low, if you factor in inflation. £1.33 today is ~£0.74 in 2010…
edit: and also cheaper than France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal etc right now…
If drivers are willing to pay more for petrol the government should increase fuel taxes. They’ve been kept low for far too long.
Road fuel margins globally are and were always historically dogshit, so the bar for this is very low
