Submission statement: The US has quietly been engaging Mali’s government again, offering cooperation against militants who have been operating in Mali for the past decade. Part of this is presumably to push back against Russian influence, which has taken the form of mostly unsuccessful military aid to help the Malian government. One of the issues is the fact that Mali has a military government and has indicated that the military plans to remain in power indefinitely. They have also recently pulled out of the ICC. Another issue is that the Sahel does have some resources, though for the most part they aren’t enough to be considered critical to the global economy.
Burkina appears to be on a different trajectory for now as their leader has taken an explicitly nationalist approach and thus far indicates that he would prefer not to engage the west for the time being.
